Abstract

Takushi Nishimura ∗ and Tomoyuki Maruyama 3, 4, † Division of Advanced Sciences, Ochadai Academic Production, Ochanomizu University, Otsuka, Bunkyo, Tokyo 112-8610, Japan College of Bioresource Sciences, Nihon University, Fujisawa 252-8510, Japan Advanced Science Research Center, Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute,Tokai 319-1195, Japan Department of Physics, Tokyo Metropolitan University, Hachioji, Tokyo 192-0397, Japan Abstract We theoretically investigate breathing oscillations of fermion condensates in anisotropic harmonic oscillator traps. When anisotropy of the trap is not large, the Fermi gases behave as threedimensional (3D) gases, and those breathing oscillations are studied in the previous work [1]; when the trap is super-anisotropic, the fermions show quasi-low-dimensional (QLD) properties differently from the 3D gases because of variation of one-particle energy-level densities, which exhibit specific types of shell-structures, QLD shell-structures, in super-anisotropic systems. In the present work, we study the effects of the QLD shell-structures on the breathing oscillations of the week-interacting fermion condensates with same number densities. The QLD shell-structures are described in the semi-classical Thomas-Fermi approximation (TFA) extended to the super-anisotropic systems, and the collective frequencies of the breathing oscillations are estimated in the scaling and sum-rule methods with the perturbation theory and extended TFA up to the first order in a coupling constant of inter-atomic interaction. As a result, we reveal that the effects of the QLD shell-structures on the collective frequencies disappear in transverse modes in both of the oblate and prolate deformed traps, and appear only in longitudinal modes with hierarchic structures associated with the trap anisotropy. We also demonstrate time-evolution of the oscillations in the present framework.

Breathing Oscillations and Quasi-Low-Dimensional Structures of Weakly-Interacting Degenerate Fermi Gases in Highly-Anisotropic Traps

Takushi Nishimura, Tomoyuki Maruyama

We theoretically investigate breathing oscillations of weakly-interacting degenerate Fermi gases in highly-anisotropic harmonic oscillator traps. If the traps are not highly anisotropic, the fermions behave as three-dimensional (3D) gases and exhibit the coupled breathing oscillations as studied in a previous paper [T. Maruyama and T. Nishimura, Phys. Rev. A 75 (2007) 033611]; Otherwise the fermions exhibit quasi-low-dimensional (QLD) properties derived from specific structures in their single-particle spectrum, called QLD structures. In the present paper, we focus on effects of the QLD structures on the breathing oscillations of the two-component fermions with symmetric population densities. Here we develop the semi-classical Thomas-Fermi approximation extended to the highly-anisotropic systems and obtain the collective frequencies in the sum-rule-scaling method and perturbation theory. As a result, we reveal that the effects of the QLD structures can not be seen in the transverse modes in the first-order perturbation and appear only in the longitudinal modes with hierarchies reflecting the QLD structures. We also demonstrate time-evolution of the oscillations in the present framework.

Coupled breathing oscillations of two-component fermion condensates in deformed traps

Tomoyuki Maruyama, Takushi Nishimura

We investigate collective excitations coupled with monopole and quadrupole oscillations in two-component fermion condensates in deformed traps. The frequencies of monopole and dipole modes are calculated using Thomas-Fermi theory and the scaling approximation. When the trap is largely deformed, these collective motions are decoupled to the transverse and longitudinal breathing oscillation modes. As the trap approaches becoming spherical, however, they are coupled and show complicated behaviors.

Quantum breathing mode of trapped systems in one and two dimensions

Jan Willem Abraham, M. Bönitz, Chris McDonald +2 more

We investigate the quantum breathing mode (monopole oscillation) of trapped fermionic particles with Coulomb and dipole interaction in one and two dimensions. This collective oscillation has been shown to reveal detailed information on the many-particle state of interacting trapped systems and is thus a sensitive diagnostics for a variety of finite systems, including cold atomic and molecular gases in traps and optical lattices, electrons in metal clusters and in quantum confined semiconductor structures or nanoplasmas. An improved sum rule formalism allows us to accurately determine the breathing frequencies from the ground state of the system, avoiding complicated time-dependent simulations. In combination with the Hartree–Fock and the Thomas–Fermi approximations this enables us to extend the calculations to large particle numbers N on the order of several million. Tracing the breathing frequency to large N as a function of the coupling parameter of the system reveals a surprising difference of the asymptotic behavior of one-dimensional and two-dimensional harmonically trapped Coulomb systems.

Breathing mode of quantum droplets in dipolar quantum gases: A sum-rule analysis

Xinran Zhang, Junli Liu, Huiyun Xiao +2 more

We theoretically investigate the ground-state properties and breathing-mode collective excitations of three-dimensional dipolar Bose gases in anisotropic harmonic traps incorporating quantum fluctuations. Combining a Gaussian variational ansatz with a non-perturbative sum-rule analysis, we derive explicit analytical expressions for both axial and radial breathing-mode frequencies, which are validated by numerical solutions of the time-dependent extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Our theoretical predictions show excellent agreement with existing experimental data for $^{166}$Er and $^{162}$Dy gases. By constructing comprehensive phase diagrams across the parameter space of the $s$-wave scattering length, atom number, and trap aspect ratio, we reveal both discontinuous first-order phase transitions and smooth crossovers between the dilute Bose-Einstein condensate and dense quantum droplet phases. We confirm that the enhanced incompressibility induced by quantum fluctuations significantly elevates the breathing-mode frequencies in the droplet phase compared to conventional weakly interacting Bose gases. Furthermore, the system undergoes a phase transition and a crossover over the scattering length under the quasi-two-dimensional and quasi-one-dimensional confinements, characterized by discontinuous jumps and continuous crossovers in peak density and atomic cloud sizes, respectively. Our work offers a rigorous and highly accurate framework to characterize collective excitations in dipolar quantum gases, providing quantitative insights for forthcoming ultracold atom experiments in lanthanide atoms and polar molecules.

Longitudinal and transverse breathing oscillations in Bose–Fermi mixtures of Yb atoms at zero temperature in the largely prolate deformed traps

Tomoyuki Maruyama, Hiroyuki Yabu

We study the breathing oscillations in bose-fermi mixtures with Yb isotopes in the largely prolate deformed trap, which are realized by Kyoto group. We choose the three combinations of the Yb isotopes, Yb170-Yb171, Yb170-Yb173 and Yb174-Yb173, whose boson-fermion interactions are weakly repulsive, strongly attractive and strongly repulsive. The collective oscillations in the deformed trap are calculated in the dynamical time-development approach, which is formulated with the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii and the Vlasov equations. We analyze the results in the time-development approach with the intrinsic oscillation modes of the deformed system, which are obtained using the scaling method, and show that the damping and forced-oscillation effects of the intrinsic modes give time-variation of oscillations, especially, in the fermion transverse mode.

Breathing modes of Bose-Einstein condensates in highly asymmetric traps

T. Kimura

The breathing mode collective-excitation frequency of a Bose-Einstein condensate is studied in a highly asymmetric (two- or one-dimensional) trap by using a sum-rule method and a time-dependent variational method. The collective-excitation frequency of the breathing mode in the Thomas-Fermi limit for a purely two- or one-dimensional trap is reproduced by a general result for a three-dimensional trap. In the case of a two- or one-dimensional trap, we obtain the lowest-order correction for the excitation frequency due to the finiteness of the trap frequency in the tightly trapped direction or the finiteness of the number of atoms.
