Bounds for coherence of quantum superpositions in high dimension

Abstract

Abstract Quantum coherence plays a major role in the promotion for quantum information processing and designing quantum technology. Since coherence is rooted in superposition principle, it is vital to understand the coherence change with respect to superpositions. Here we study the bounds for coherence of quantum superpositions in high dimension. We consider three most frequently used measures of coherence, i.e. the relative entropy of coherence,l1norm of coherence and robustness of coherence. For a quantum state (an arbitrary dimension) and its arbitrary decomposition, we give the upper and lower bounds for coherence of the superposition state in terms of the coherence of the states being superposed.

Bounds on positive operator-valued measure based coherence of superposition

Meng‐Li Guo, Jin‐Min Liang, Bo Li +2 more

Quantum coherence is a fundamental feature of quantum physics and plays a significant role in quantum information processing. By generalizing the resource theory of coherence from von Neumann measurements to positive operator-valued measures (POVMs), POVM-based coherence measures have been proposed with respect to the relative entropy of coherence, the l 1 norm of coherence, the robustness of coherence and the Tsallis relative entropy of coherence. We derive analytically the lower and upper bounds on these POVM-based coherence of an arbitrary given superposed pure state in terms of the POVM-based coherence of the states in superposition. Our results can be used to estimate range of quantum coherence of superposed states. Detailed examples are presented to verify our analytical bounds.

Coherence of Superposition States*

Shanshan Yuwen, Lian-He Shao, Zhengjun Xi

Abstract We find tight upper bound on the coherence of a superposition of two states in terms of the coherence of the two states constituting the superposition with l 1 -norm of coherence. Our upper bound is tighter than the one presented by Liu, et al. [Quantum Inf. Process. 15 (2016) 4209.] We also generalize the results to the case that the superposition is constituted with more than two states in high dimension, and we give the corresponding upper bounds.

Bounds for imaginarity of quantum superpositions

Xianfei Qi

Abstract Complex numbers play a key role in classical and quantum physics. Recently, the comprehensive formulation of the resource theory of imaginarity was proposed and various computable and meaningful measures of imaginarity were identified. In this work, we investigate the bounds for imaginarity of quantum superpositions in high dimension using the geometric imaginarity. We establish the relationship between the imaginarity of the superposition of quantum states and the imaginarity of the states being superposed.

Characterization of quantum coherence by l p -norm and skew information in MUBs *

Yuan-Hong Tao, Qing Yu, Liu Sun +2 more

Abstract Quantum coherence stands as a core property of quantum mechanics, its origin rooted in the superposition principle that governs quantum states. Leveraging mutually unbiased bases (MUBs), this paper delves into an in-depth exploration of quantum coherence characteristics through the lens of the l p -norm and s k e w Information. To begin with, we establish rigorous equality relations for the l p -norm coherence of qubit states under Pauli MUBs. Following this, we derive the complementary relations (upper bounds) and uncertainty relations (lower bounds) associated with l p -norm coherence under MUBs within arbitrary d-dimensional systems. Then, by virtue of deducing the connection between the classical purity and quantum purity of the square root of the quantum state, i.e. ρ , we further elaborate on the strict equality relations of skew-information coherence as well as several corresponding entropy-based coherences under MUBs in d-dimensional systems. Additionally, we provide illustrative examples to instantiate each of these relations, enhancing their clarity and practical relevance.

Coherence estimation of quantum superposition states

Chengyang Zhang, Zhihua Guo, Ying Yang +1 more

Abstract Quantum coherence is a fundamental resource in quantum information science and one of the most distinctive features of quantum mechanics. In this paper, we derive a tight upper bound for the coherence of the superposition composed of two orthogonal states using ℓ 1 -norm coherence measure, demonstrating that our upper bound is tighter than the one presented by Yue et al (2017 Sci. Rep. 7 4006). Furthermore, we extend the result to the superposition of n orthogonal states and establish the optimal upper bound for its coherence. Our results provide a more accurate estimate of the coherence of the superposition state.

Certification and Quantification of Multilevel Quantum Coherence

Martin Ringbauer, Thomas R. Bromley, Marco Cianciaruso +6 more

Quantum coherence, present whenever a quantum system exists in a superposition of multiple classically distinct states, marks one of the fundamental departures from classical physics.Quantum coherence has recently been investigated rigorously within a resource-theoretic formalism. However, the finer-grained notion of multilevel coherence, which explicitly takes into account the number of superposed classical states, has remained relatively unexplored.A comprehensive analysis of multilevel coherence, which acts as the singleparty analogue to multipartite entanglement, is essential for understanding natural quantum processes as well as for gauging the performance of quantum technologies. Here, we develop the theoretical and experimental groundwork for characterizing and quantifying multilevel coherence. We prove that nontrivial levels of purity are required for multilevel coherence, as there is a ball of states around the maximally mixed state that do not exhibit multilevel coherence in any basis. We provide a simple, necessary, and sufficient analytical criterion to verify the presence of multilevel coherence, which leads to a complete classification of multilevel coherence for three-level systems. We present the robustness of multilevel coherence, a bona fide quantifier, which we show to be numerically computable via semidefinite programming and experimentally accessible via multilevel coherence witnesses, which we introduce and characterize. We further verify and lower bound the robustness of multilevel coherence by performing a semi-device-independent phase discrimination task, which is implemented experimentally with four-level quantum probes in a photonic setup. Our results contribute to understanding the operational relevance of genuine multilevel coherence, also by demonstrating the key role it plays in enhanced phase discrimination-a primitive for quantum communication and metrology-and suggest new ways to reliably and effectively test the quantum behavior of physical systems.
