Abstract

The problem investigated refers to periodically driven 1D quantum inverted harmonic oscillator (IHO) with the Hamiltonian of . The model is used widely in huge quantum applications concerned unstable molecular complexes and ions under laser light affection. Non-stationary Schrödinger equation (NSE) was solved analytically and numerically by means of Maple 17 with initial wave function (w.f.) of generalized Gaussian type. This one described the converging 1D probability flux and fitted well the quantum operator of initial conditions (IC). For the IC one can observe, first, the collapse of w.f. packet into extremely narrow 1D space interval of length and, second, its spreading back up to its starting half width, and all that - at dimensionless times. At certain phases j defined by W and s0 the wave packet center displayed nonharmonic oscillating behavior near some slowly drifting space position within this time interval and after that leaved onto infinity while the unlimited packet spreading. And the phases themselves served as bifurcation points separating the NSE solutions with the outgoing to from those with. In “resonant” case of the values obeyed an inverted Fermi-Dirac formula of; for differing the asymptotic of obeyed well classical law.

Quantum Analogue of Unstable Limit Cycles of a Periodically Perturbed Inverted Oscillator

V. V. Chistyakov

To study the quantum analogue of classical limit cycles, we consider the behavior of a particle in a negative quadratic potential perturbed by a sinusoidal field. We propose a type of wave function asymptotically satisfying the operator of initial conditions and still admitting analytic integration of the nonstationary Schrödinger equation. The solution demonstrates that for certain perturbation phases determined by the forcing frequency and the initial indeterminacy of the coordinate, the wave-packet center temporarily stabilizes near the potential maximum for approximately two “natural periods” of the oscillator and then moves to infinity with bifurcations in the drift direction. The effect is not masked by packet spreading, because the packet undergoes anomalous narrowing (collapse) to a size of the order of the characteristic length on the above time interval and its unbounded spreading begins only after this.

On quantum analogue of instable oscillating states of an inverted oscillator in external poly-harmonic field

V. V. Chistyakov

Abstract Nonstationary Schroedinger equation (NSE) is solved analytically and numerically to study a phenomenon of dynamical stabilization of the inverted oscillator driven by polyharmonic in time and spatially uniform force with specially chosen phase shifts. It is shown that for Gaussian wave packet asymptotically fitting the initial condition (IC) it occurs temporary delay of the packet center about top of the parabolic potential for about 2 fundamental time periods followed by the center bifurcation.

Short time dynamics of harmonic oscillator coherent states in anharmonic systems. I. One-dimensional motion

Jürgen Brickmann

The dynamics of an initially excital Gaussian wave packet (harmonic oscillator coherent state, HOCS) in a general one-dimensional anharmonic system is studied analytically with the aid of a second quantization formalism for times shorter than a classical oscillation period. The initial state population probability PQ(t), its classical counterpart PC(t), and the overlap probability PQC(t) between a time evolved wave packet and a classically moving Gaussian with stationary shape are calculated in order to analyze the spreading of the wave packet. It was found that, in general, PQ(t) and PC(t) agree very well if the potential energy function has no strongly changing low order derivatives. This agreement is held even if the wave packet spreads drastically within the time scale considered as can be demonstrated by analyzing PQC(t). The analytical expressions for PQ(t), PC(t), and PQC(t) are applied to a dissociative third-order oscillator and a strongly anharmonic fourth-order oscillator. While for a harmonic system, the initial decay time of PQ(t) and PC(t) (which are identical in this case) are only dependent on the energy expectation value 〈H〉 with respect to the initial HOCS, differences up to an order of magnitude occur for HOCS with the same energy in the model systems.

Wave Packet Motion in Harmonic Potential

Hideo Tsuru

A motion of a Gaussian wave packet of a single electron in a harmonic potential is obtained by solving the time dependent Schrödinger equation analytically. The analytic formula of the phase of the wave function which depends on both time and space is also presented explicitly. The probability density of the wave packet moves changing its width and central position periodically. The period of the change of the width is half of that of the central position. The interpretation of these periodic changes in terms of the Green's function which can be derived by the path integration formulation is also discussed.

Observation of Phase Space Dynamics of Inverted Harmonic Oscillator

Georgi Gary Rozenman, Maxim A. Efremov, Wolfgang P. Schleich +2 more

We have experimentally realized a parabolic potential barrier for surface gravity water waves. The analogy between the resulting wave equation and the Schrodinger equation for the inverted harmonic oscillator (IHO) enables us to study the propagation of quantum-mechanical wave packets with different average energies in this iconic scattering model. We observe a clear boundary in the phase-space dynamics, namely the separatrix, which distinguishes wave packets with energies below the maximum of the IHO potential from those with energies above it. In the former case, the wave packet is blocked, whereas in the latter case, it is transmitted. We also measure the corresponding variation in momentum during this process.

Forced quantum inverted oscillator

Pavel A. Golovinski

New exact and asymptotic results for a quantum inverted oscillator, driven by the variable external force, are presented. To illustrate the advantages of our approach, we applied the obtained propagator to the descriptions of evolution the initial Gaussian wave packet under arbitrary time-dependent force or a δ-pulse action. The alternative problem of tunneling a particle through a parabolic barrier under the influence of a low-frequency harmonic force we solve in the quasistatic approximation. Going to the Heisenberg picture in the Caldeira-Leggett model, we describe the influence of a time-dependent force on an open inverted oscillator. The resulting dynamics is presented in the form of combination the evolution of the average value of a coordinate operator and the stochastic diffusion, being induced the wave packet spreading and the Brownian motion.
