Abstract

A review is given of certain tridiagonal N-dimensional non-Hermitian J-parametric real-matrix quantum Hamiltonians H(N). The domains Ɗ(N) of reality of their spectra of energies are studied, with particular attention paid to their exceptional-point boundaries ∂Ɗ(N). The strongest admissible couplings are specified in closed form for all N.

Maximal couplings in -symmetric chain models with the real spectrum of energies

Miloslav Znojil

The domain of all the coupling strengths compatible with the reality of the energies is studied for a family of non-Hermitian N × N matrix Hamiltonians H ( N ) with tridiagonal and -symmetric structure. At all dimensions N , the coordinates are found of the extremal points at which the boundary hypersurface touches the circumscribed sphere (for odd N = 2 M + 1) or ellipsoid (for even N = 2 K ).

Exceptional points and domains of unitarity for a class of strongly non-Hermitian real-matrix Hamiltonians

Miloslav Znojil

A family of non-Hermitian real and tridiagonal-matrix candidates H(N)(λ)=H0(N)+λW(N)(λ) for a hiddenly Hermitian (a.k.a. quasi-Hermitian) quantum Hamiltonian is proposed and studied. Fairly weak assumptions are imposed upon the unperturbed matrix [the square-well-simulating spectrum of H0(N) is not assumed equidistant)] and upon its maximally non-Hermitian N-parametric antisymmetric-matrix perturbations [matrix W(N)(λ) is not even required to be PT-symmetric]. Despite that, the “physical” parametric domain D[N] is (constructively) shown to exist, guaranteeing that in its interior, the spectrum remains real and non-degenerate, rendering the quantum evolution unitary. Among the non-Hermitian degeneracies occurring at the boundary ∂D[N] of the domain of stability, our main attention is paid to their extreme version corresponding to Kato’s exceptional point of order N (EPN). The localization of the EPNs and, in their vicinity, of the quantum-phase-transition boundaries ∂D[N] is found feasible, at the not too large N, using computer-assisted symbolic manipulations, including, in particular, the Gröbner-basis elimination and the high-precision arithmetics.

Tridiagonal {\cal PT} -symmetricN-by-NHamiltonians and a fine-tuning of their observability domains in the strongly non-Hermitian regime

Miloslav Znojil

A generic -symmetric Hamiltonian is assumed tridiagonalized and truncated to N < ∞ dimensions, H → H (chain model) , and all its up–down symmetrized special cases with J = [ N /2] real couplings are considered, H (chain model) → H ( N ) . Using symbolic manipulation and extrapolation techniques we find out that in the strongly non-Hermitian regime the secular equation gets partially factorized at all N . This enables us to reveal a fine-tuned alignment of the dominant couplings implying an asymptotically sharply spiked shape of the boundary of the J -dimensional quasi-Hermiticity domain in which all the spectrum of energies E ( N ) n remains real and observable.

Non-hermitian models in higher dimensions

Pulak Ranjan Giri

It is know that PT-symmetric models have real spectra provided the symmetry is not spontaneously broken. Even pseudo-hermitian models have real spectra, which enlarge the the class of non-hermitian models possessing real spectra. We however consider non-hermitian models in higher dimensions which are not necessarily explicit PT-symmetric nor pseudo-hermitian. We show that the models may generate real spectra depending upon the coupling constants of the Hamiltonian. Our models thus further generalize the class of non-hermitian systems, which possess real spectra.

Complete set of inner products for a discrete PT-symmetric square-well Hamiltonian

Miloslav Znojil

A discrete N-point Runge–Kutta version H(N)(λ) of one of the simplest non-Hermitian square-well Hamiltonians with real spectrum is studied. Its possible Hermitizations mediated by nontrivial (often called “non-Dirac”) metrics Θ≠I are considered as a source of nonequivalent standard probabilistic interpretations of this quantum model. A complete set of these alternative, multiparametric metrics Θ=Θ(a,b,…)(N)(λ) defining all the eligible Hamiltonian-dependent representations of the physical Hilbert space of states is constructed, in closed form, for any coupling λ∊(−1,1) and for any matrix dimension N.

Closed-form construction of exceptional points in a two-parametric PT-symmetric large-matrix model

Miloslav Znojil

Stable bound states living on a discrete one-dimensional N-point lattice are assumed generated by a certain two-parametric PT symmetric potential $V=V(A,B)$. At any $N$, the coordinates $A=A^{(EP)}$ and $B=B^{(EP)}$ of the Kato's exceptional point (marking the phase-transition instant of the loss of stability) are defined, exactly, via roots of a certain elementary quartic polynomial.
