What is random about a quantum random walk?

Arul Lakshminarayan

We use simple deterministic dynamical systems as coins in studying quantum walks. These dynamical systems can be chosen to display, in the classical limit, a range of behaviors from the integrable to chaotic, or deterministically random. As an example of an integrable coin we study the Fourier walk that generalizes the Hadamard walk and show that the walker slows down with coin dimensionality, which controls the effective Planck constant. Introducing multi-Harper maps as deterministic models of random walks we study the effect of coin chaos on the quantum walk. We also demonstrate that breaking time-reversal symmetry in the coin dynamics effectively slows down the walk.

Walk/Zeta Correspondence for quantum and correlated random walks

Norio Konno, Shunya Tamura

In this paper, following the recent paper on Walk/Zeta Correspondence by the first author and his coworkers, we compute the zeta function for the three- and four-state quantum walk and correlated random walk, and the multi-state random walk on the one-dimensional torus by using the Fourier analysis. We deal with also the four-state quantum walk and correlated random walk on the two-dimensional torus. In addition, we introduce a new class of models determined by the generalized Grover matrix bridging the gap between the Grover matrix and the positive-support of the Grover matrix. Finally, we give a generalized version of the Konno-Sato theorem for the new class. As a corollary, we calculate the zeta function for the generalized Grover matrix on the d-dimensional torus.

Spectral analysis of hierarchical continuous-time quantum walks

Jirô Akahori, Yusuke Ide, Tomoki Kato +3 more

In this paper, we introduce hierarchical random walks at first. In this model, we use two types of random walkers, global and local walkers. The global walker chooses a local walker at every step, then the chosen local walker moves a single step. After that we construct the corresponding continuous-time quantum walks and discuss their spectral structures. Then we define multi-dimensional continuous-time quantum walks by taking a marginal distribution with respect to the global walker.
