Controlling quantum interference in phase space with amplitude

Abstract

We experimentally show a quantum interference in phase space by interrogating photon number probabilities (n = 2, 3, and 4) of a displaced squeezed state, which is generated by an optical parametric amplifier and whose displacement is controlled by amplitude of injected coherent light. It is found that the probabilities exhibit oscillations of interference effect depending upon the amplitude of the controlling light field. This phenomenon is attributed to quantum interference in phase space and indicates the capability of controlling quantum interference using amplitude. This remarkably contrasts with the oscillations of interference effects being usually controlled by relative phase in classical optics.

Phase-Sensitive Manipulations of a Squeezed Vacuum Field in an Optical Parametric Amplifier inside an Optical Cavity

Jing Zhang, Chenguang Ye, Gao Feng +1 more

A squeezed vacuum field can be amplified or deamplified when it is injected, as the signal beam, into a phase-sensitive optical parametric amplifier (OPA) inside an optical cavity. The spectral features of the reflected quantized signal field are controlled by the relative phase between the injected squeezed vacuum field and the pump field for the OPA. The experimental results demonstrate coherent phenomena of OPA in the quantum regime and show phase-sensitive manipulations of quantum fluctuations for quantum information processing.

Phase distributions of a two-mode squeezed coherent state

A. Lukš, Vlasta Peřinová

In experiments, pulses of two-mode squeezed light were generated by an optical parametric amplifier. For certain ranges of parameters the joint photon number distribution of two-mode squeezed coherent states exhibits nonclassical oscillations. The nonclassical features were explained using the interference-in-phase-space concept in four-dimensional phase space. We investigate joint phase distribution of two- mode squeezed coherent states for presence of peaks and attempt to relate the peaks to the manifest oscillations in the joint photon number distribution.

Generation of amplitude squeezed states of light from phase squeezed coherent states

Kasivishvanathan Sundar

We propose a scheme to generate a displaced macroscopic superposition of phase squeezed coherent states by incorporating an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) and a nonlinear Kerr medium in a Mach-Zhender interferometer configuration. We show that the phase squeezed coherent state generated by the OPO evolves into a macroscopic superposition of phase squeezed coherent states on spending a specific amount of time inside a Kerr medium. The phase space displacement is achieved by the interference of the intense reference beam with the signal in the final beam splitter of the interferometer. The noise of the reference beam contaminating the signal is prevented by making this beam splitter highly reflective. We have calculated the photon number uncertainty of the outcoming beam and have shown that it is smaller than the usual amplitude squeezed coherent state's value.

Interference of squeezed light produced by two independent optical parametric oscillators

Junxiang Zhang, Changde Xie, Kunchi Peng

The interference of the squeezed light produced by two independent, identical optical parametric oscillators below threshold is discussed in the context of semiclassical theory. It is shown that interference exists in the usual sense between the output fields from two optical parametric oscillators with coherent injected signals. The degree of squeezing and the intensity and noise fluctuation of the interference field are calculated in detail.

Classical and nonclassical interference

Krzysztof Wódkiewicz, G. H. Herling

The relation between quantum interference and classical interference is discussed in terms of the Wigner function and an analogous classical expression. For two displaced coherent states and two displaced electric-field Gaussian pulses, both the quantum-mechanical and classical Wigner functions exhibit oscillatory behavior. Classical analogs of squeezing, photon-number oscillation, and the $Q$ function are presented.

Coherent control of photon pairs via quantum interference between second- and third-order quantum nonlinear processes

Alessia Stefano, Samuel E. Fontaine, J. E. Sipe +1 more

Genuine quantum interference between independent nonlinear processes of different order provides a route to coherent control that cannot be reduced to a classical field interference. Here we present an all-optical analogue of coherent carrier injection by exploiting interference between second- and third-order quantum nonlinear processes in an integrated photonic platform. Photon pairs generated via spontaneous parametric down-conversion and spontaneous four-wave mixing coherently contribute to the same final two-photon state, resulting in a phase-dependent modulation of both the generation rate and the spectral structure of the emitted biphoton state. We illustrate the features of such interference and how it can be used to shape biphoton wavefunctions and their quantum correlations. These results identify interference between nonlinear processes of different order as a distinct form of coherent quantum control within quantum nonlinear optics.
