The nature of three dimensions: Non-local behavior in the three-dimensional (3D) Ising model

Abstract

In this work, we first reveal the nature of three dimensions: the existence of non-local behavior. Taking the three-dimensional (3D) Ising model as an example, we analyze the transfer matrices as well as the partition function to discuss in details the origin of non-local behavior in three dimensions. We then point out that fail to deal with non-local behavior is one of the main disadvantages of several theoretical approaches (such as conventional low-temperature expansions, conventional high-temperature expansions, perturbative renormalization group and Monte Carlo methods, etc), all of which take local environments into account only. This work provides a deep understanding on the natural difference between 3D bulk materials and 2D materials, and shows that how to treat the non-local behavior and the interaction between spins along the third dimension is a key point for solving exactly the problems of the 3D systems with the nearest neighboring interactions. Finally, we will briefly review recent advance in the 3D Ising model and related topics.

Mathematical structure of the three-dimensional (3D) Ising model

Zhang Zhi-dong

An overview of the mathematical structure of the three-dimensional (3D) Ising model is given, from the viewpoints of topologic, algebraic and geometric aspects. By analyzing the relations among transfer matrices of the 3D Ising model, Reidemeister moves in the knot theory, Yang-Baxter and tetrahedron equations, the following facts are illustrated for the 3D Ising model: 1) The complexified quaternion basis constructed for the 3D Ising model represents naturally the rotation in a (3 + 1) - dimensional space-time, as a relativistic quantum statistical mechanics model, which is consistent with the 4-fold integrand of the partition function by taking the time average. 2) A unitary transformation with a matrix being a spin representation in 2^(nlo)-space corresponds to a rotation in 2nlo-space, which serves to smooth all the crossings in the transfer matrices and contributes as the non-trivial topologic part of the partition function of the 3D Ising model. 3) A tetrahedron relation would ensure the commutativity of the transfer matrices and the integrability of the 3D Ising model, and its existence is guaranteed also by the Jordan algebra and the Jordan-von Neumann-Wigner procedures. 4) The unitary transformation for smoothing the crossings in the transfer matrices changes the wave functions by complex phases Φx, Φy, and Φz. The relation with quantum field and gauge theories, physical significance of weight factors are discussed in details. The conjectured exact solution is compared with numerical results, and singularities at/near infinite temperature are inspected. The analyticity in β = 1/(kB T) of both the hard-core and Ising models has been proved for β > 0, not for β = 0. Thus the high-temperature series cannot serve as a standard for judging a putative exact solution of the 3D Ising model.

Two-dimensional Ising model with the next nearest interactions

Zhang Zhi-dong

The partition function and the spontaneous magnetization of a two-dimensional (2D) Ising model with the next nearest interactions at zero magnetic field are derived analytically. At first, the transfer matrices are analyzed in three representations, i.e., Clifford algebraic representation, transfer tensor representation, and schematic representation, to inspect nontrivial topological structures in this system. The system is equivalent to a triangular Ising model plus an interaction along the z axis, so that the approaches developed for the 3D Ising models are modified to be appropriable for analytically solving the solution of the 2D Ising model with the next nearest interactions. The comparison with the exact solutions of other Ising lattices reveals that either the increase of the number of interactions in a unit cell or the presence/increase of topological contributions enhances the critical point of the Ising lattices. The results obtained in this work are helpful for understanding the physical properties of the 2D magnetic materials.

Ising Universality in Three Dimensions: A Monte Carlo Study

Henk W. J. Blöte, Erik Luijten, Jouke R. Heringa

We investigate three Ising models on the simple cubic lattice by means of Monte Carlo methods and finite-size scaling. These models are the spin- 1 2 Ising model with nearest-neighbor interactions, a spin- 1 2 model with nearest-neighbor and third-neighbor interactions, and a spin-1 model with nearest-neighbor interactions. The results are in accurate agreement with the hypothesis of universality. Analysis of the finite-size scaling behavior reveals corrections beyond those caused by the leading irrelevant scaling field. We find that the correction-to-scaling amplitudes are strongly dependent on the introduction of further-neighbor interactions or a third spin state. In a spin-1 Ising model, these corrections appear to be very small. This is very helpful for the determination of the universal constants of the Ising model. The renormalization exponents of the Ising model are determined as y t =1.587 (2), yh =2.4815 (15) and y i = -0.82 (6). The universal ratio Q = #m 2 # 2 /#m 4...

Exact solution of the two-dimensional (2D) Ising model at an external magnetic field

Zhang Zhi-dong

The exact solution of the two-dimensional (2D) Ising model at an external magnetic field is derived by a modified Clifford algebraic approach. At first, the transfer matrices are analyzed in three representations, i.e., Clifford algebraic representation, transfer tensor representation and schematic representation, to inspect nonlocal effects in this many-body interacting system. It is ensured that nontrivial topological structures exist in this system, which is analogous to (but different with) those in the three-dimensional (3D) Ising model at zero magnetic field. Therefore, the approaches developed for the 3D Ising models are modified to be appropriable for solving analytically the solution of the 2D Ising model at a magnetic field. An additional rotation, serving as a topological Lorentz transformation, is applied for dealing with the topological problems in the present system. The rotation angle for the transformation is determined by Yang-Baxter relations and a subsequent average of rotation angles treating the linear change of the topological actions. Application of a magnetic field increases the magnetization, shifting the critical point to higher temperatures. At the temperature above the critical point, the magnetization keeps zero until a critical field at which it jumps rapidly as a first-order magnetization process. The partition function and the magnetization obtained are helpful for understanding the physical properties, in particular, the magnetization processes of the 2D magnetic materials.
