Optical-depth scaling of light scattering from a dense and cold atomic Rb87 gas

Kasie Kemp, S.J. Roof, Mark D. Havey +3 more

We report investigation of near-resonance light scattering from a cold and dense atomic gas of $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms. Measurements are made for probe frequencies tuned near the $F=2\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{F}^{\ensuremath{'}}=3$ nearly closed hyperfine transition, with particular attention paid to the dependence of the scattered light intensity on detuning from resonance, the number of atoms in the sample, and atomic sample size. We find that, over a wide range of experimental variables, the optical depth of the atomic sample serves as an effective single scaling parameter which describes well all the experimental data.

Collective resonance fluorescence in small and dense atom clouds: Comparison between theory and experiment

S. D. Jenkins, Janne Ruostekoski, Juha Javanainen +5 more

We study the emergence of a collective optical response of a cold and dense $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atomic cloud to a near-resonant low-intensity light when the atom number is gradually increased. Experimental observations are compared with microscopic stochastic simulations of recurrent scattering processes between the atoms that incorporate the atomic multilevel structure and the optical measurement setup. We analyze the optical response of an inhomogeneously broadened gas and find that the experimental observations of the resonance line shifts and the total collected scattered light intensity in cold atom clouds substantially deviate from those of thermal atomic ensembles, indicating strong light-induced resonant dipole-dipole interactions between the atoms. At high densities, the simulations also predict a significantly slower decay of light-induced excitations in cold than in thermal atom clouds. The role of dipole-dipole interactions is discussed in terms of resonant coupling examples and the collective radiative excitation eigenmodes of the system.

Optical pumping dynamics and near-resonance light scattering in an ultracold sample of R87b atoms

Salim Balik, Mark D. Havey, Igor M. Sokolov +1 more

We report measurements of near-resonance light scattering from an ultracold sample of $^{87}\text{R}\text{b}$ atoms formed in a magneto-optical trap (MOT). Time-dependent measurements of scattering of probe radiation tuned in the vicinity of the $F=1\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{F}^{\ensuremath{'}}=0$ hyperfine transition of the ${D}_{2}$ resonance line reveal dynamics due to Zeeman optical pumping on this transition in competition with diffusive light scattering in the optically dense sample. Zeeman mixing effects due to small residual magnetic fields also play an important role in the scattered light dynamics and reveal surprising sensitivity to the field strength. The various processes are examined as a function of probe-laser power, detuning from atomic resonance, and the presence or absence of the spatially inhomogeneous MOT quadrupole field.
