We demonstrate optical pulse switching and amplification based on simultaneous Raman and Kerr effects in a fiber-loop mirror. Stimulated Raman scattering is shown to play a dominant role in the transfer function of the loop with highly germania-doped fibers, in agreement with theoretical predictions. Optical switching of a 100-ps signal pulse with an amplification factor of 10 was demonstrated in a 20-mol.% GeO(2)-doped fiber.

Tuning of group delay with stimulated Raman scattering-induced dispersion in gas-filled optical fiber

Haihong Bao, Wei Jin, Hoi Lut Ho

We report the first demonstration of group delay tuning with stimulated Raman scattering-induced dispersion in a hydrogen-filled hollow-core optical fiber.A pump laser induces a sharp refractive index change near the S 0 (0) Raman transition of hydrogen molecules, enabling the control of the group velocity of signal pulses around the Stokes wavelength.Experiments with an 80-m-long hollow-core fiber filled with 2.5 bar hydrogen achieved continuous tuning of the pulse delay up to 1.42 ns by varying the Raman amplification from 0 to 10 dB.The tunable pulse delay is realized by changing the pump power as well as the hydrogen pressure. This work provides a new technique for controlling the pulse propagation in optical fibers with high flexibility.

Stimulated rayleigh-kerr and raman-kerr scattering in a liquid-core hollow fiber system

Guang S. He, Paras N. Prasad

By using a liquid-core multimode hollow fiber system with a long gain-length (2.5 or 7 m), a superbroadening stimulated scattering added to the pump line and/or the several orders of Stokes-stimulated Raman scattering lines of the core medium can be observed. This kind of stimulated scattering is related to the optical Kerr (reorientation) effect and Raman-induced Kerr effect in a liquid consisting of anisotropic molecules. Experimental studies of hollow fiber filled with different liquid samples (carbon disulfide, benzene, carbon tetrachloride) are reported. A theoretical approach based on a photon scattering model of optical Kerr effect and Raman-induced Kerr effect is proposed to explain the principal features of our experimental results. The significance of stimulated Kerr scattering studies and their potential applications are discussed.
