Abstract

We present a novel approach to demonstrate coherence between different bins of a frequency-bin entangled photon-pair. The observed interference patterns provide a simple way to verify frequency-bin entanglement using slow single-photon detectors.

Frequency-bin entangled photons

Laurent Olislager, Johann Cussey, Anh Tuan Nguyen +4 more

A monochromatic laser pumping a parametric down-conversion crystal generates frequency-entangled photon pairs. We study this experimentally by addressing such frequency-entangled photons at telecommunication wavelengths (around $1550$ nm) with fiber-optics components such as electro-optic phase modulators and narrow-band frequency filters. The theory underlying our approach uses the notion of frequency-bin entanglement. Our results show that the phase modulators address coherently up to eleven frequency bins, leading to an interference pattern which can violate by more than five standard deviations a Bell inequality adapted to our setup.

Two-particle interference experiment with frequency-entangled photon pairs

Heonoh Kim, Jeong-Hoon Ko, Taesoo Kim

We present experimental observations of a nonclassic and nonlocal interference effect with frequency-entangled photon pairs. We observed two-photon interference in a Hong–Ou–Mandel interferometer by monitoring the coincidence-counting rate as we varied the path-length difference or the relative time delay between two photons. The quantum-mechanical probabilities of joint detection by two detectors that respond to different frequency components exhibit differences that depend not only on the arrangement of the detector pairs but on the spectral filtering. The experimental results provide more understanding of two-photon entanglement and of the interference effects that arise from superposition of indistinguishable probability amplitudes.
