Ground-state properties of few dipolar bosons in a quasi-one-dimensional harmonic trap

F. Deuretzbacher, Jonas C. Cremon, S. M. Reimann

We study the ground state of few bosons with repulsive dipole-dipole interaction in a quasi-one-dimensional harmonic trap by means of the exact diagonalization method. Up to three interaction regimes are found, depending on the strength of the dipolar interaction and the ratio of transverse to axial oscillator lengths: a regime where the dipolar Bose gas resembles a system of weakly $\ensuremath{\delta}$-interacting bosons, a second regime where the bosons are fermionized, and a third regime where the bosons form a Wigner crystal. In the first two regimes, the dipole-dipole potential can be replaced by a $\ensuremath{\delta}$ potential. In the crystalline state, the overlap between the localized wave packets is strongly reduced and all the properties of the boson system equal those of its fermionic counterpart. The transition from the Tonks-Girardeau gas to the solidlike state is accompanied by a rapid increase of the interaction energy and a considerable change of the momentum distribution, which we trace back to the different short-range correlations in the two interaction regimes.

Analysis of two and three dipolar bosons in a spherical harmonic trap

C. J. Bradly, Harry M. Quiney, A. Martin

As dipolar gases become more readily accessible in experiment there is a need to develop a comprehensive theoretical framework of the few-body physics of these systems. Here, we extend the coupled-pair approach developed for the unitary two-component Fermi gas to a few-body system of dipolar bosons in a spherical harmonic trap. The long range and anisotropy of the dipole-dipole interaction is handled by a flexible and efficient correlated Gaussian basis with stochastically variational optimization. Solutions of the two-body problem are used to calculate the eigenenergy spectrum and structural properties of three trapped bosonic dipoles. This demonstrates the efficiency and flexibility of the coupled-pair approach at dealing with systems with complex interactions.

Breathing dynamics of a trapped impurity in a dipolar Bose gas

Fang-Qi Hu, Ju-Kui Xue

With the consideration of impurity-bosons coupling and dipole–dipole interactions (DDI), we study the breathing dynamics of a harmonically trapped impurity interacting with a separately trapped background of dipolar Bose gas. By using the variational approach, the breathing equations, the breathing frequencies and the effective potentials governing the breathing dynamics of the impurity in dipolar gas are obtained. The effects of DDI, impurity-bosons interaction and external trapping potentials on breathing dynamics of impurity are discussed. We find that, because of the anisotropic and long-range characters of DDI, the effects of DDI, impurity-bosons interaction and external trapping potentials on breathing dynamics of impurity are strongly coupled. DDI has significant modification on dynamics, which depends on the external trapping potentials. For spherically symmetric external trapping, DDI makes the impurity more cigar-shaped along axial direction and the breathing oscillation in radial direction is suppressed by DDI. However, the effect of DDI on the breathing dynamics is weakened for cigar-shaped external trapping. Interestingly, for strong external pancake-shaped trapping, the symmetries of the breathing dynamics with respect to attractive and repulsive impurity-bosons coupling recover. Especially, for some critical value of impurity-bosons coupling, the breathing dynamics undergo a sudden quench.
