Highly efficient generation of entangled photon pair by spontaneous parametric downconversion in defective photonic crystals

Yong Zeng, Ying Fu, Xiaoshuang Chen +2 more

We study the process of spontaneous parametric downconversion in a one-dimensional defective quadratic nonlinear photonic crystal. It is shown that the strong confinements of both the pump and signal waves around the defective layer result in a giant enhancement of the entangled photon-pair generation. An enhancement factor as high as 3.4×106 is obtained in our defective structure based on the dual-localized modes. Furthermore, the linewidth of the downconverted fields is only 0.1 nm. Such a photonic crystal structure can be applied as a highly efficient source of entangled photon pairs for highly integrated all-optical circuits.

Spontaneous parametric downconversion in a laser-poled lithium niobate nonlinear photonic crystal with nanoscale resolution

Xinzhe Yang, Qian Yu, Xiaoyi Xu +5 more

Based on quasi-phase-matching (QPM) theory, nonlinear photonic crystals (NPCs) are capable of realizing efficient spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) for the generation of photonic entangled states. However, the traditional electric field poling techniques employed in NPC fabrication often result in non-negligible processing errors of a few hundred nanometers, thus impeding the production of quantum photon pairs as intended. In this work, we investigate the SPDC photon pairs generated in a laser-poled lithium niobate (LN) NPC. By using the recently developed laser poling technique, the processing error of the NPC is substantially reduced to approximately 15 nm. Consequently, the coincidence counts of the generated photon pairs in the experiment reach 83.6% of the designed value. Our result paves the way for on-demand production of high-quality quantum sources, which has potential applications in quantum communications and quantum computations.

Generation of multichannel color-entangled photon pairs via type-I spontaneous parametric downconversion

Peng Yu, Wei Li

A method is presented for generating multiple-channel color-entangled photon pairs simultaneously based on type I quasi-phase-matched spontaneous parametric downconversion pumped in a single periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) crystal. It is predicted that one-, and two-channel color-entangled photon pairs can be simultaneously generated just by suitably choosing the PPLN grating period and the pump frequency. We point out that the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of idler and signal light are broadened dramatically due to spontaneous parametric downconversion in case of a pulsed pump.
