Abstract

We demonstrate a single-photon SWAP gate between polarization and spatial momentum on a SOI chip. 19.8% error ratio is obtained, and phase coherence of the SWAP operation is measured via single photon interference with up to 58.7% visibility.

Single-photon two-qubit SWAP gate for entanglement manipulation

Marco Fiorentino B, Taehyun Kim, Franco N. C. Wong

A SWAP operation between different types of qubits of single photons is essential for manipulating hyperentangled photons for a variety of applications. We have implemented an efficient SWAP gate for the momentum and polarization degrees of freedom of a single photon. The SWAP gate was utilized in a single-photon two-qubit quantum logic circuit to deterministically transfer momentum entanglement between a pair of down-converted photons to polarization entanglement. The polarization entanglement thus obtained violates Bell's inequality by more than 150 standard deviations.

Integrated Photonic SWAP Gates for Qudits and Qubit Registers

Max Ehrhardt, Konrad Tschernig, Matthias Heinrich +5 more

Abstract Advances in quantum information science are closely related to our ability to prepare, manipulate, and measure the states of multiple quantum bits (qubits). To this end, quantum gates are the key components by which specific operations over individual and multiple qubits are implemented. In the context of quantum optics, qubits can be encoded in any degree of freedom of a multi-photon state, e.g. polarization, frequency or spatial configuration. The faithful reciprocal exchange of information between two qubits, a so-called SWAP, is one of the fundamental operations that underpin modern quantum architectures. Here, we present a novel method realizing multiple-qubit SWAP operations over several qubits, without relying on any other gates, in an integrated-photonic setting. In principle, our approach allows for the implementation of SWAP operations with unity efficiency regardless of the number of involved qubits. Further, we discuss how this approach can be applied to qudits. Our findings provide a powerful new functional element for the design of compact quantum-photonic circuitry.

Experimental realization of SWAP operation on hyper-encoded qubits

Robert Stárek, Martina Miková, Ivo Straka +4 more

Hyper-encoding enables storing several qubits in a single photon using its different degrees of freedom like polarization and spatial ones. This approach enables feasible implementation of multi-qubit operations. One of the basic manipulations of two or more qubits is to swap their quantum state. Here we report on feasible and stable experimental implementation of a deterministic single photon two-qubit SWAP gate that interchanges path and polarization qubits. We discuss the principle of its operation and give detailed information about experimental demonstration employing two Mach-Zehnder interferometers with one common arm. The gate characterization is done by full quantum process tomography using photons produced by heralded single-photon source. The achieved quantum process fidelity reached more than 0.94 with an effective phase uncertainty of the whole setup, evaluated by means of Allan deviation, below 2.5 deg for 2.5 h without any active stabilization. Our design provides a contribution to the hyper-encoded linear quantum optics toolbox.
