Quantum carpets and Wigner functions

Abstract

A particle confined to an infinitely deep potential well is the ideal toy model for studying the origin of the regular patterns appearing for many physical systems in the spacetime representation of the probability density. The Wigner function is a useful tool to bring out the role of interference in the formation of these so-called "quantum carpets".

Quantum carpets woven by Wigner functions

O. M. Friesch, Irene Marzoli, Wolfgang P. Schleich

The dynamics of many different quantum systems is characterized by a regular net of minima and maxima of probability stretching out in a spacetime representation. We offer an explanation to this phenomenon in terms of the Wigner function. This approach illustrates very clearly the crucial role played by interference.

Quantum carpets: a tool to observe decoherence

P Kazemi, S. Chaturvedi, Irene Marzoli +2 more

Quantum carpets—the spatio-temporal de Broglie density profiles—woven by an atom or an electron in the near-field region of a diffraction grating bring to light, in real time, the decoherence of each individual component of the interference term of the Wigner function characteristic of superposition states. The proposed experiments are feasible with present-day technology.

Quantum carpets: A probe to identify wave packet fractional revivals

Iqra Yausaf, Shahid Iqbal

Quantum carpets- in position and momentum space- woven by the self-interference of de Broglie wave of an atom or an electron, trapped in an infinitely deep potential well, are explained. The recurrence of self-similar structures in designs of these carpets mimics the phenomena of quantum revivals and fractional revivals. We identify fractional revivals of various order by means of these space-time and momentum-time interference patterns.

Fermionic quantum carpets: From canals and ridges to solitonlike structures

Piotr T. Grochowski, Tomasz Karpiuk, Mirosław Brewczyk +1 more

Quantum carpets are spatiotemporal representations of the probability density of a quantum particle in a box. They stand out due to the characteristic structures, called canals and ridges. The authors show that these structures become much more pronounced in fermionic systems

One - dimensional Infinite Potential Well of Particles Moving Wigner Function

Yanhui Li

As Wigner quasi-probability distribution function, the Wigner function contains the entire information in the evolution of the quantum states in the phase space. The function also has great significance in physics. This paper introduces the definition and nature of the Wigner function,as well as the general expression. Then,it used the integral method given Wigner function of a one-dimensional infinitely deep square potential well. Finally,we discuss the characteristics of the distribution of the function and point out that it is a real function of the phase space.

The Wigner Function for a Quantum System with an Infinitely Deep Square-Well Potential

Shi‐Hai Dong, Guo-Hua Sun, Yu Jiang

The Wigner distribution function for a quantum system with an infinitely deep square-well potential is obtained analytically and presented by plotting the Wigner distribution functions on the quantum phase space. The cross-matrix elements of the expectation values of some classical quantities are also obtained. The case of the symmetrical square-well potential is studied briefly.
