Abstract

We propose the use of nonlinear periodic waveguides for direct and fully integrated generation of counterpropagating photon pairs by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. Using the unique properties of Bloch modes in such periodic structures, we furthermore show that two counterpropagating phase-matching conditions can be fulfilled simultaneously, allowing for the generation of path-entangled Bell states in a single periodic waveguide. To demonstrate the feasibility of our proposal, we design a photonic crystal slab waveguide made of lithium niobate and numerically demonstrate Bell-state generation.

Counterpropagating path-entangled photon pair sources based on simultaneous spontaneous parametric down-conversion processes of nonlinear photonic crystal

Can Yang, Chaoxiang Xi, Jietai Jing +1 more

Ultra-bright source of entangled photons is an essential component in optical quantum information processing. Here we propose a counterpropagating path-entangled photon pair sources using a quasi-periodic modulated lithium niobate crystal. The nonlinear crystal designed by a dual-grid method, simultaneously phase-matched two spontaneous parametric down-conversion processes. Signal and idler modes have opposite propagation directions in the two spontaneous parametric down-conversion processes, which is the key to generating path-entangled photon pairs. Compared to copropagating entangled sources, the counterpropagating path-entangled sources result in a much narrower spectrum. The quantum state of the path-entanglement source is not only suited for quantum coding, but also to allow the implementation of complex quantum algorithms on a photonic chip.

Counterpropagating entangled photons in a periodically poled nonlinear waveguide

Mark C. Booth, Mete Atatüre, Giovanni Di Giuseppe +3 more

Entangled photons, which may be generated through the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in a crystal with /spl chi//sup (2)/ nonlinearity, have long been in the spotlight for quantum-optics experiments. The generation of entangled photons by quasi-phase matching (QPM) in lithium niobate offers the promise of increased photon-pair production and, with the integration of a waveguide structure, control of the spatial characteristics of the down-converted photons. It turns out that the use of a waveguide structure, in conjunction with periodic poling to achieve quasi-phase matching, offers another critically important feature: the possibility of generating counterpropagating signal and idler photons. We consider the conditions required for generating counterpropagating photon beams and explore some of the unique properties of this source of light using a periodically poled LiNbO/sub 3/ waveguide.

We propose a counterpropagating path-entangled photon pairs source using a quasi-periodic modulated lithium niobate crystal. Through the simulation of joint-spectral amplitude of photons, we confirm that our scheme can produce the maximally path-entangled two-photon states.

Photonic crystal waveguides as sources of counterpropagating factorizable biphoton states

Sina Saravi, Thomas Pertsch, Frank Setzpfandt

We demonstrate numerically that photonic crystal slab waveguides can generate spectrally unentangled biphoton states, highly desired for heralding of single photons. We achieve this by modally phase matching a counterpropagating spontaneous parametric down-conversion process, in a fully integrated scheme and without the need for periodic poling. Such a configuration is an ideal integrated source of heralded single photons, as it spatially separates the photons of a pair at the source without any extra components, while allowing for generation of spectrally narrow photons on a very short length scale.

Generation of narrowband counterpropagating polarization-entangled photon pairs based on thin-film lithium niobate on insulator

Jia-Chen Duan, Ji-Ning Zhang, Yin-Jun Zhu +6 more

We propose a scheme for the generation of counterpropagating polarization-entangled photon pairs from a periodically poled lithium niobate on insulator waveguide. The waveguide is designed to enable a special dispersion relationship between the T M 00 and T E 00 modes that allows two concurrent counterpropagating quasi-phase-matching type-II spontaneous parametric downconversion processes with a single reciprocal wave vector. Due to the counterpropagating phase-matching geometry, the source has a narrow bandwidth in the order of several gigahertz. The compact source opens up a new method for integrated photonic technologies.

Counter-propagating photon pair generation in a nonlinear waveguide

Kai-Hong Luo, Vahid Ansari, Marcello Massaro +5 more

Counter-propagating parametric conversion processes in non-linear bulk crystals have been shown to feature unique properties for efficient narrowband frequency conversion. In quantum optics, the generation of photon pairs with a counter-propagating parametric down-conversion process (PDC) in a waveguide, where signal and idler photons propagate in opposite directions, offers unique material-independent engineering capabilities. However, realizing counter-propagating PDC necessitates quasi-phase-matching (QPM) with extremely short poling periods. Here, we report on the generation of counter-propagating single-photon pairs in a self-made periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide with a poling period on the same order of magnitude as the generated wavelength. The single photons of the biphoton state bridge GHz and THz bandwidths with a separable joint temporal-spectral behavior. Furthermore, they allow the direct observation of the temporal envelope of heralded single photons with state-of-the art photon counters.
