Coherent transfer of optical orbital angular momentum in multi-order Raman sideband generation

J. Strohaber, M. Zhi, Alexei V. Sokolov +3 more

Experimental results from the generation of Raman sidebands using optical vortices are presented. By generating two sets of sidebands originating from different locations in a Raman-active crystal, one set containing optical orbital angular momentum and the other serving as a reference, Young's double slit experiment was simultaneously realized for each sideband. The interference between the two sets of sidebands was used to determine the helicity and topological charge in each order. Topological charges in all orders were found to be discrete and follow selection rules predicted by a cascaded Raman process.

Characterizing the fractional coherence vortices through the area of the intensity cross-correlation function

Patnala Vanitha, Youngbin Na, Do‐Kyeong Ko

We have generated the fractional coherence vortices using the speckle patterns obtained from the scattering of the fractional vortex beams. In this study, we found the topological charge of the fractional vortex beam with a resolution of 0.01 using the area of the coherence function of scattered fractional optical vortex beams. We have also provided accuracy for the measurement of topological charges of fractional vortex beams using the studies of the area of the coherence function. Our experimental results are well matched with the theoretical results. These fractional coherence functions can be used to generate a security key for data authentication and data encryption. In addition, fractional vortex beams have multiple OAM modes and can be used to address the explosive growth in free-space optical communication.

Computation of topological charges of optical vortices via nondegenerate four-wave mixing

Wei Jiang, Qun-feng Chen, Yong-Sheng Zhang +1 more

In this paper, we report an experiment, which demonstrates computation of topological charges of two optical vortices via a nondegenerate four-wave-mixing process. We show that the output signal photon carries orbital angular momentum which equals to the subtraction of the orbital angular momenta of the probe light photon and the backward pump light photon. The $^{85}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms are used as the nonlinear medium, which transfers the orbital angular momenta of lights.
