Scattering and effective interactions of ultracold atoms with spin-orbit coupling

Long Zhang, Youjin Deng, Peng Zhang

We derive an analytical expression for the scattering amplitude of two ultracold atoms of arbitrary spin and with general spin-orbit (SO) coupling, on the basis of our recent work [Phys. Rev. A 86, 053608 (2012)]. As an application, we demonstrate that SO coupling can induce scattering resonance in the case with finite scattering length. The same approach can be applied to calculate the two-body bound state of SO-coupled ultracold atoms. For the ultracold spin-$1/2$ Fermi gases in three- or two- dimensional systems with SO coupling, we also obtain the renormalization relation of effective contact interaction with momentum cutoff, as well as the applicability of Huang-Yang pseudopotential.

Spin-orbit-coupling–induced resonance in an ultracold Bose gas

Qi Gu, Lan Yin

We study a two-component Bose gas with artificial spin-orbit coupling (SOC) which couples the center-of-mass momentum of an atom to its internal states. We show that in this system resonance can be induced by tuning SOC strength. With a two-dimensional SOC, resonances in two scattering channels can be induced by tuning the aspect ratio of SOC strengths. With a three-dimensional SOC, resonance in all three scattering channels can be induced by tuning the appropriate SOC strength. Our method can also be applied to a Fermi gas where resonance can also be induced with two- or three-dimensional SOC.

Modified Bethe-Peierls boundary condition for ultracold atoms with spin-orbit coupling

Peng Zhang, Long Zhang, Youjin Deng

We show that the Bethe-Peierls (BP) boundary condition should be modified for ultracold atoms with spin-orbit (SO) coupling. Moreover, we derive a general form of the modified BP boundary condition, which is applicable to a system with an arbitrary kind of SO coupling. In the modified BP condition, an anisotropic term appears and the interatomic scattering length is normally SO-coupling dependent. For the special system in the current experiments, however, it can be proved that the scattering length is SO-coupling independent, and it takes the same value as in the case without SO coupling. Our result is helpful for the study of both few-body and many-body physics in SO-coupled ultracold gases.
