Evolution of ultrashort light pulses in a two-level medium visualized with the finite-difference time domain technique

A.V. Tarasishin, Sergey A. Magnitskii, Vladimir Shuvayev +1 more

The finite-difference time-domain technique is employed to examine the evolution of the amplitude, duration, waveform, and phase of ultrashort light pulses propagating in a medium of two-level atoms or molecules. The results of these numerical simulations agree reasonably well with predictions of the McCall-Hahn analysis for the evolution of the amplitude and the phase of short pulses in a two-level medium until the pulse duration becomes less than the duration of a single optical cycle. Noticeable deviations from the McCall-Hahn scenario were observed for pulses with durations shorter than the duration of a single field cycle.

Polarization evolution of a few-cycle ultrashort laser pulse propagating in a degenerate three-level medium

Xiaohong Song, Weifeng Yang, Shangqing Gong +2 more

The propagation of an arbitrary polarized few-cycle ultrashort laser pulse in a degenerate three-level medium is investigated by using an iterative predictor-corrector finite-difference time-domain method. It is found that the polarization evolution of the ultrashort laser pulse is dependent not only on the initial atomic coherence of the medium but also on the polarization condition of the incident laser pulse. When the initial effective area is equal to $2\ensuremath{\pi}$, complete linear-to-circular and circular-to-linear polarization conversion of few-cycle ultrashort laser pulses can be achieved due to the quantum interference effects between the two different transition paths.

Resonant interaction between an ultrashort pulse train and a two-level system: frequency domain analysis

Marco P. Moreno, S. S. Vianna

We investigate the problem of two-level atoms driven by an ultrashort pulse train in the frequency domain. At low intensity regime, we obtain a perturbative analytical solution that allows us to discuss the role of the mode number of the frequency comb near or at resonance on the temporal evolution of the atomic coherence. At high intensities, the effect of the number of modes is analyzed in the steady-state regime through numerical calculations.
