Insulating states and metal-nonmetal transition in the Hubbard model

Abstract

If a band is narrow and is not nearly empty or nearly full, the Hubbard lattice is an insulator. A nearly half‐filled lattice is a Hubbard‐type insulator with a gap but if the number of electrons decreases or increases beyond a certain limit, the lattice becomes a ’’gapless’ insulator. As the bandwidth increases, these insulating states will turn metallic. The mechanism involved in the transition is presented.

Existence of Two Types of Insulating States in the Hubbard Model

Tadashi Arai

If a band is narrow and is not nearly empty nor nearly full, the Hubbard lattice is shown to be an insulator. The lattice containing about one electron per atom will be a Hubbard-type insulator with a wide energy gap but if the number of electrons decreases or increases beyond a certain range, the gap is suddenly reduced, yielding a small-gap insulator of a completely new type.

A New Two-Pole Approximation in the Hubbard Model. Metal-Insulator Transition

L. Didukh

A new two-pole approximation, which allows to describe the transition from an insulating state to a metallic one at increase of bandwidth, and also the observable in some compounds transition from a metalic state to an insulating one with increasing temperature, is presented. The case of a paramagnetic narrow-band material at half-filling is considered. Single-particle Green function and energy spectrum of electron system are calculated. The expressions for energy gap width and the concentration of polar states (holes or doublons) are obtained. The conditions for metallic and insulating states are found.

Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition in Hubbard models at high total spin

Q. P. Li, Robert Joynt

We study the metal-insulator transition and magnetic ordering in the Hubbard model using the particle-hole mapping. This representation facilitates the exact solution of the half-filled band in the limit of high spin. We find that the two-dimensional Hubbard model has a charge-excitation gap at half filling for any finite U in the high-spin region on both the bipartite square lattice and the nonbipartite triangular lattice. We show, using the Kohn insulator criteria, that this bound-state phase is indeed insulating. Using the information from the single-pair solution, we construct a generalized BCS type of many-body wave function and derive the gap equation for lower-spin states. We find that in some cases, the system goes through a phase transition to become a metal as the total spin ${\mathit{S}}_{\mathit{z}}$ is lowered.

Electronic phase transitions in the half-filled ionic Hubbard model

L. Craco, P. Lombardo, R. Hayn +2 more

A detailed study of electronic phase transitions in the ionic Hubbard model at half filling is presented. Within the dynamical mean field approximation a series of transitions from the band insulator via a metallic state to a Mott--Hubbard insulating phase is found at intermediate values of the one-body potential $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ with increasing the Coulomb interaction $U$. We obtain a critical region in which the metallic phase disappears and a coexistence phase between the band and the Mott insulating state sets in. Our results are consistent with those obtained at low dimensions, thus they provide a concrete description for the charge degrees of freedom of the ionic Hubbard model.

On the Magnetic and Metal-Insulator Transitions in a Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model

Hisashi Kondo, Tôru Moriya

Antiferromagnetic and metal to insulator transitions in the ground state of two-dimensional half-filled and nearly half-filled Hubbard models with the nearest neighbor and the second nearest neighbor transfers (- t and t ′ , respectively) are studied by using the Green's function approach with the self-energy up to the second order in the coupling constant U . For a choice of the parameter value t ′ / t =0.2 the half-filled model undergoes the first order phase transition between paramagnetic metallic (PM) phase and antiferromagnetic insulator (AFI) phase at U / t =4.0 while the first order transition between PM and antiferromagnetic metallic (AFM) phases takes place for nearly half-filled band. The one-electron spectral density is calculated for the PM, AFM, and AFI phases near the phase boundaries. In the PM phase the quasi-particle dispersion indicates the band narrowing from the Hartree-Fock results and the flat band behavior as was indicated by previous stadies and was observed in high- T c cuprates. The quasi-particle dispersion in the AFM phase is seen to be close to the Hartree-Fock results.

Absence of metal–insulator transition in Hubbard’s model for a hypercubic lattice

A. L. Alistratov, Yu. A. Dimashko, V. S. Podol’skii

Hubbard’s model with local repulsion and half-filled band is considered for a hypercubic lattice. It is shown that there is no metal–insulator transition in this model and its ground state is an antiferromagnetic insulator for any finite interaction.
