Degeneracy in the particle-in-a-box problem

The notions of systematic and accidental degeneracy are discussed for a quantum-mechanical particle in a two-dimensional box. Separability of coordinates is shown to admit extra systematic degeneracy over that expected from the point-group symmetry. The 'accidental' degeneracy for square and triangular boxes is discussed in detail and related to geometric symmetries-described by rings of operators, however, and not by a symmetry group.

One-dimensional oscillator in a box

Paolo Amore, Francisco Marcelo Fernández

We discuss a quantum-mechanical model of two particles that interact by means of a harmonic potential and are confined to a one-dimensional box with impenetrable walls. We apply perturbation theory to the cases of different and equal masses and analyse the symmetry of the states in the latter case. We compare the approximate perturbation results with accurate numerical ones.

Two-particle Harmonic Oscillator in a One-dimensional Box

Paolo Amore, Francisco Marcelo Fernández

We study a harmonic molecule confined to a one-dimensional box with impenetrable walls. We explicitly consider the symmetry of the problem for the cases of different and equal masses. We propose suitable variational functions and compare the approximate energies given by the variation method and perturbation theory with accurate numerical ones for a wide range of values of the box length. We analyze the limits of small and large box size.
