We calculate the probe spectrum for multilevel atoms in a damped, weakly driven cavity supporting two degenerate orthogonally polarized modes. One mode is weakly driven by a linearly polarized external field. The atoms, initially prepared in a
mF=0 hyperfine ground state, couple to the driven mode by making a $\ensuremath{\Delta}{m}_{F}=0$ transition and to the orthogonally polarized mode by making $\ensuremath{\Delta}{m}_{F}=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$ transitions to other hyperfine sublevels. We compare probe spectra, the intensity of the driven mode, the undriven mode, and the atomic excitation probability as a function of the detuning of the driving laser from the cavity resonance for three- and four-level atomic models. In both cases the spectrum of the driven mode is a vacuum Rabi doublet familiar from the driven, damped Jaynes-Cummings model. The undriven mode spectrum is a triplet with the maximum on resonance for the three-level model while the four-level model has a four-peaked spectrum. We discuss the role of strong coupling to the undriven mode in accounting for the qualitative difference between the models.
We propose a scheme for the measurement of a two-mode entangled field-state in a high-
Q cavity. The scheme utilizes the momentum distribution spectrum in the Raman-Nath regime of a three-level atom in
V configuration. Due to the two modes of the electromagnetic field the atom may have
x interactions with mode
A, and
y interactions with mode
B, causing a complex momentum distribution. The momentum distribution of the atom after interaction with the quantized cavity fields contains the information of the field photon statistics. We reconstruct the joint photon statistics of the entangled field with the help of recorded momentum spectrum. We also propose to reconstruct the Wigner function of a two-mode entangled field state by injecting two coherent states resonant to each mode into the cavity and then measuring the joint photon statistics of the displaced field.
We study spectral properties and photon statistical characteristics of a strongly driven two-level atom produced within a nonlinear photonic crystal. This study reveals that when a large discontinuity in the local photon density of states and the cavity field mode is resonant with the central component of the Mollow spectrum of atomic resonance fluorescence, there is squeezing of the cavity field below the quantum shot noise limit and the peak of the cavity field spectrum that is achieved in the nonlinear photonic crystal is higher than that in the linear photonic crystal. Furthermore, we can see the statistics of the photons emitted by the atom into the microcavity is sub-Poissonian and close to Poissonian when the frequency of the driving field is high.
