A hybrid-systems approach to spin squeezing using a highly dissipative ancillary system

Squeezed states of spin systems are an important entangled resource for quantum technologies, particularly quantum metrology and sensing. Here we consider the generation of spin squeezed states by interacting the spins with a dissipative ancillary system. We show that spin squeezing can be generated in this model by two different mechanisms: one-axis twisting (OAT) and driven collective relaxation (DCR). We can interpolate between the two mechanisms by simply adjusting the detuning between the dissipative ancillary system and the spin system. Interestingly, we find that for both mechanisms, ancillary system dissipation need not be considered an imperfection in our model, but plays a positive role in spin squeezing. To assess the feasibility of spin squeezing we consider two different implementations with superconducting circuits. We conclude that it is experimentally feasible to generate a squeezed state of hundreds of spins either by OAT or by DCR.

Dissipation-assisted preparation of steady spin-squeezed states of SiV centers

We propose an efficient scheme for generating spin-squeezed states at steady state in a spin-mechanical hybrid system, where an ensemble of SiV centers is coupled to a strongly damped nanomechanical resonator. We show that there exists a collective steady state in the system, which is exactly formed by the collective spin states plus the zero excitation state of the mechanical mode. The generation of the steady spin-squeezed state is based on a dissipative quantum dynamical process in which the mechanical dissipation plays a positive role but without destroying the target state. We demonstrate that the spin-squeezed steady state can be deterministically prepared via dissipative means, with the optimal spin squeezing up to $4/N$ in the ideal case, where $N$ is the number of spins. This work provides a promising platform for quantum information processing and quantum metrology.

Quantum metrology with critical driven-dissipative collective spin system

Venelin P. Pavlov, Diego Porras, Peter A. Ivanov

Abstract We propose two critical dissipative quantum metrology schemes for single parameter estimation which are based on a quantum probe consisting of a coherently driven ensemble of N spin-1/2 particles under the effect of a collective spin decay. The collective spin system exhibits a dissipative phase transition between thermal and ferromagnetic phases, which is characterized by a nonanalytical behavior of the spin observables. We show that thanks to the dissipative phase transition the sensitivity of the parameter estimation can be significantly enhanced. Furthermore, we show that our steady state is a spin squeezed state which allows one to perform parameter estimation with sub shot-noise limited measurement uncertainty.
