An introduction to quantum computing for statisticians and data scientists

Anna Lopatnikova, Minh‐Ngoc Tran, Scott A. Sisson

Quantum computers promise to surpass the most powerful classical supercomputers in tackling critical practical problems, such as designing pharmaceuticals and fertilizers, optimizing supply chains and traffic, and enhancing machine learning. Since quantum computers operate fundamentally differently from classical ones, their emergence will give rise to a new evolutionary branch of statistical and data analytics methodologies. This review aims to provide an introduction to quantum computing accessible to statisticians and data scientists, equipping them with a comprehensive framework, the basic language, and building blocks of quantum algorithms, as well as an overview of existing quantum applications in statistics and data analysis. Our objective is to empower statisticians and data scientists to follow quantum computing literature relevant to their fields, collaborate with quantum algorithm designers, and ultimately drive the development of the next generation of statistical and data analytics tools.

Quantum Computing for Antennas and Propagation Problems: A gentle introduction.

Marco Donald Migliore

Quantum computing is a cutting-edge paradigm in data processing that uses the principles of quantum mechanics to perform calculations. It has promising applications in various fields of engineering, including applied electromagnetism. Like any emerging technology, quantum computing has advantages and limitations that require in-depth understanding to make effective use in real-world engineering applications. This article aims to provide a simple and intuitive introduction to the fundamental principles of quantum computing, delving into the strengths and limitations inherent to this innovative technology and suggesting some applications of interest in the antennas and propagation community.

Reliability analysis of algorithms on a desk Quantum Computer

Marco Carratù, Giuseppe Di Leo, Vincenzo Gallo +4 more

Quantum computing, a data processing technology based on quantum mechanics, is one of the most promising technologies in the current research scenario. Indeed, this new paradigm disrupts how information is conceived, stored, and processed thus making quantum computers still complicated to manage and program. Added to this complexity is the need to guarantee quantum coherence, which could fail due to either noise or the influence of external parameters. While high-power quantum computers are usually conditioned and protected by complex and expensive systems supplied by the manufacturer itself, relatively low-cost desk quantum computers are only accompanied by data sheets reporting operation limits within influence parameters should be constrained but no analytical information is provided about computer sensitivity to the parameters. In this paper, the authors report the experimental results of a desk two-qubit quantum computer performance characterization carried out by evaluating its sensitivity to influence parameters during the execution of elementary algorithms. The aim is to help face the use of this frontier computing resource also in research projects where funds cannot cover the cost of complex conditioning systems. After a brief introduction on quantum computing and circuits, the adopted test method is described, and the experimental results discussed in detail.
