Exact lower bounds to the ground-state energy of spin systems: The two-dimensionalS=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model

Abstract

We present a very simple but fairly unknown method to obtain exact lower bounds to the ground-state energy of any Hamiltonian that can be partitioned into a sum of sub-Hamiltonians. The technique is applied, in particular, to the two-dimensional spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model. Reasonably good results are easily obtained and the extension of the method to other systems is straightforward.

GROUND-STATE ENERGY OF THE SPIN-1/2 TWO-DIMENSIONAL ANTIFERROMAGNETIC HEISENBERG MODEL

C. Y. Pan

The ground-state energy of the spin-1/2 two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model is obtained by a real space renormalization group method. A relative larger cluster (5×5) is used to improve the accuracy and a boundary theory is applied to extrapolate to the result which is in good agreement with the finite-size calculation and in fairly good agreement with the other available numerical estimates. How to further improve the calculation is discussed.

We remark that a slightly more elaborate method than that proposed by Tarrach and Valentriaa [Phys. Rev. B 41, 9611 (1990)] has led to better bounds on the ground-state energy of the considered model.Received 5 July 1990DOI:https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.43.8668©1991 American Physical Society

Rigorous lower bounds on the ground-state energy of correlated Fermi systems

Roser Valent, P. J. Hirschfeld, J C Anglès d'Auriac

We show that the thermodynamic potential E-\ensuremath{\mu}N of an itinerant interacting Fermi system is bounded below by the sum of the thermodynamic potentials of small subsystems into which the infinite system is partitioned. Exact lower bounds for the energy in the thermodynamic limit are therefore easily obtainable by diagonalization of small clusters. In one dimension, these bounds are remarkably close to Bethe-ansatz results for the Hubbard model. We present lower bounds for the two-dimensional Hubbard and t-J Hamiltonians. Such bounds may serve as rigorous tests for approximate treatments of this class of problems.

Lower bounds for the ground-state energies of the two-dimensional Hubbard andt-Jmodels

Roser Valent, Joachim Stolze, P. J. Hirschfeld

We present simple lower bounds on the ground-state energy of the two-dimensional (2D) Hubbard and t-J models for arbitrary values of band filling and coupling constant. For the Hubbard model we derive two types of bounds, both based on decomposing the model Hamiltonian into a sum of sub-Hamiltonians. For a decomposition into local cluster sub-Hamiltonians, we perform a generalized Legendre transform on previously derived bounds for the grand-canonical potential. For a decomposition into spin-up and spin-down parts, previous results on the spinless Falicov-Kimball model may be used to obtain bounds for the Hubbard model, generalizing a result of Langer and Mattis to arbitrary filling. For the 2D t-J model we have only considered the decomposition into clusters. The 1D Hubbard model is used as a test case. The bounds may be improved by diagonalizing the Hamiltonian for larger clusters.

Ground-State Energy of Heisenberg Antiferromagnet for Spins s=12 and s=1 in d=1 and 2 Dimensions

Daniel Charles Mattis, C. Y. Pan

A simple real-space renormalization method yields the ground-state energy of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet. We find the ground-state energy per spin for $s=\frac{1}{2}$ (-0.4438 in 1D, -0.6723 in 2D) and $s=1$ (-1.388 in 1D and -1.907 in 2D) to three-figure accuracy, using properties of relatively small odd-numbered clusters. Our results provide reasonable proof for long-range order in the ground state of the $s=\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet in 2D.
