Controllable interactions between Rydberg atoms and ultracold plasmas

We discuss the control of dipole-dipole interactions in a frozen assembly of Rydberg atoms. We report the evidence of dipole blockade of the Rydberg excitation for two configurations: dipole blockade induced by electric field and dipole blockade in Förster resonance. We demonstrate that two individual atoms separated by ∼ 4 μm can act as a collective dipole if their interaction is strong enough to be in the dipole blockade regime. This observation is crucial for the quantum entanglement of two or more atoms using dipole-dipole interaction. The dipole-dipole interactions between Rydberg atoms are also responsible for Penning ionization leading to the formation of an ultracold plasma. We have demonstrated that Penning ionization of np Rydberg cesium atoms can be prevented by considering repulsive dipole-dipole interactions.

The dipole blockade of ultracold Rydberg atoms plays a significant role in the formation of quantum logic gate and the investigation of quantum information storage. The interaction between ultracold Rydberg atoms is presented, furthermore the mechanisms of long range Van de Waals interactions and dipole-dipole interactions as well as excitation blockade of ultracold Rydberg atoms are presented. The possibility of constructing quantum logic gate based on single Rydberg atom excitation is described.

Evidence of quadrupole-quadrupole interactions in ultracold gases

Jianing Han, Juliet Michell, Morgan Umstead

Van der Waals interactions are interactions between dipoles. Similarly, quadrupole-quadrupole interactions are interactions between quadrupoles. In this article, we focus on the interactions between two dipoles or two quadrupoles. Classically, we treat one Rydberg atom as a dipole; an outer excited electron and an ion core are the two poles of a dipole. Quantum mechanically, we consider Rydberg transition dipoles. Therefore, dipole-dipole interactions are the interactions between two Rydberg atoms. Rydberg atoms have quadrupole components; consequently, the interactions between two Rydberg atoms have quadrupole-quadrupole interaction components. In this article, we examine the dipole-dipole and quadrupole-quadrupole contribution to the interactions between ultracold Rydberg atoms. It is shown that the evidence of quadrupole-blockade has been observed, which is essential for fabricating more compact quantum computers, quantum electronics, as well as quantum sensing.
