Abstract

Quantum control methodology is presented to design many-body spin states in a spin chain of Rydberg atoms using laser pulses and a magnetic field. A two-photon ladder-type configuration is implemented, which is advantageous due to the combined action of the one-photon and two-photon detunings as control parameters. Many-body spin states are designed consisting of an ensemble of spins encoded in sublevels of Rydberg states and coupled via the van der Waals interactions.

Many-Body Physics with Spin States of Rydberg Atoms

Svetlana Malinovskaya, Elliot Pachniak

Rydberg atoms with very high principal quantum numbers trapped in a optical trap are used to study the collective spin properties of ultracold atomic systems. Generation of entanglement in spin states of Rydberg atoms by chirped optical pulses

Svetlana Malinovskaya, Elliot Pachniak

Quantum entanglement is a crucial resource in many quantum information and quantum communication tasks. In this work, we present a quantum control methodology to create entangled states of two basic classes, the W and the GHZ. A chain of 87 Rb atoms in an optical lattice is considered interacting with laser pulses to induce two-photon excitations to Rydberg states having a specific magnetic quantum number. Generation of the W and GHZ three-atomic states is demonstrated via the mechanism of the two-photon adiabatic passage in collective states implying the overlapping chirped pulses and the interplay of the Rabi frequency with the one-photon detuning and the strength of the Rydberg-Rydberg interactions. Control and characterisation of a Rydberg spin system to explore many-body physics

Miguel Ferreira-Cao

This thesis explores the implementation of a spin-1/2 system to realise quantum simulation of Heisenberg XX and XXZ models. The spins are mapped onto two high-lying atomic levels, so-called Rydberg states, in an ultracold sample of 87Rb and coupled by a microwave field. Efficient synthesis and control of the driving field has been introduced in the setup in order to probe the spin dynamics with NMR sequences. Two- and three-photon excitation schemes are implemented to prepare the Rydberg spins. In order to spatially resolve the Rydberg excitation dynamics, a new imaging technique is employed, which uses the depletion of absorption in presence of Rydberg atoms to detect their distribution in the atomic cloud, revealing the emergence of spatial order of the Rydberg excitations due to strong van der Waals interactions. To benchmark the validity of this platform, the coherence of the spin ensemble is measured by Ramsey techniques in the low-density regime, where the single-spin dynamics accurately describes the observations. Despite the black-body redistribution of Rydberg spins setting a limit for the T2* time of the spin system, the coherence is measured to persist over long timescales on the order of 130 μs. Thus, scaling up the density of spins, first signatures of dipolar many-body effects for |nS⟩ − |nP⟩ (XX) and |nS⟩ − |(n + 1)S⟩ (XXZ) spin combinations have been observed.

Generation of entanglement in spin states of Rydberg Rb atoms by chirped optical pulses

Elliot Pachniak, Yuri V. Rostovtsev, Svetlana Malinovskaya

Entangled states are crucial for modern quantum enabled technology which makes their creation key for future developments. In this paper, a robust quantum control methodology is presented to create entangled states of two typical classes, the W and the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ). It was developed from the analysis of a chain of alkali atoms $^{87}Rb $ interaction with laser pulses, which lead to the two-photon transitions from the ground to the Rydberg states with a predetermined magnetic quantum number. The methodology is based on the mechanism of two-photon adiabatic passage using overlapping chirped pulses and interplaying the Rabi frequency, the one-photon detuning, and the strength of the Rydberg-Rydberg interactions.
