Effective-field-theory analysis of Efimov physics in heteronuclear mixtures of ultracold atomic gases

Bijaya Acharya, Chen Ji, Lucas Platter

We use an effective-field-theory framework to analyze the Efimov effect in heteronuclear three-body systems consisting of two species of atoms with a large interspecies scattering length. In the leading-order description of this theory, various three-body observables in heteronuclear mixtures can be universally parametrized by one three-body parameter. We present the next-to-leading corrections, which include the effects of the finite interspecies effective range and the finite intraspecies scattering length, to various three-body observables. We show that only one additional three-body parameter is required to render the theory predictive at this order. By including the effective range and intraspecies scattering length corrections, we derive a set of universal relations that connect the different Efimov features near the interspecies Feshbach resonance. Furthermore, we show that these relations can be interpreted in terms of the running of the three-body counterterms that naturally emerge from proper renormalization. Finally, we make predictions for recombination observables of a number of atomic systems that are of experimental interest.

An Experimental Platform for Studying the Heteronuclear Efimov Effect with an Ultracold Mixture of $$^\textbf{6}$$Li and $$^\textbf{133}$$Cs Atoms

Abstract We present the experimental apparatus enabling the observation of the heteronuclear Efimov effect in an optically trapped ultracold mixture of $$^6$$ 6 Li- $$^{133}$$ 133 Cs with high-resolution control of the interactions. A compact double-species Zeeman slower consisting of four interleaving helical coils allows for a fast-switching between two optimized configurations for either Li or Cs and provides an efficient sequential loading into their respective MOTs. By means of a bichromatic optical trapping scheme based on species-selective trapping we prepare mixtures down to 100 nK of $${1\times 10^{4}}$$ 1 × 10 4 Cs atoms and $${7\times 10^{3}}$$ 7 × 10 3 Li atoms. Highly stable magnetic fields allow high-resolution atom-loss spectroscopy and enable to resolve splitting in the loss feature of a few tens of milligauss. These features allowed for a detailed study of the Efimov effect.

The heteronuclear Efimov effect

K. Helfrich, H.‐W. Hammer

Ultracold quantum gases with large scattering length show resonant enhancement of three-body loss rates when an Efimov trimer is at the scattering threshold. We calculate the three-body loss rates in heteronuclear mixtures of atoms for the case of large scattering length between the unlike atoms. Using zero-range interactions, we present results from the numerical solution of the integral equations for the recombination amplitude in momentum space and extract expressions for the recombination rate constants. Moreover, we calculate the relative positions of loss features for different sign of the scattering length and a first comparison with available experimental data is shown.
