Time-of-Flight Imaging Method to Observe Signatures of Antiferromagnetically Ordered States of Fermionic Atoms in an Optical Lattice

Kensuke Inaba, Makoto Yamashita

We propose a simple method to detect the antiferromagnetic (AF) state of fermionic atoms in an optical lattice by combining a time-of-flight (TOF) imaging method and a Feshbach resonance. In this scheme, the nontrivial dynamics of fermionic atoms during the imaging process works as a probe with respect to the breaking of the translational symmetry in the AF state. Precise numerical simulations demonstrate that the characteristic oscillatory dynamics induced by the scattering process that transfers an AF ordering vector appears in TOF images, which can be easily observed experimentally.

Magnetic localization in the spin-polarized one-dimensional Anderson-Hubbard model

Masahiko Okumura, S. Yamada, Nobuhiko Taniguchi +1 more

In order to study an interplay of disorder, correlation, and spin imbalance on antiferromagnetism, we systematically explore the ground state of one-dimensional spin-imbalanced Anderson-Hubbard model by using the density-matrix renormalization-group method. We find that disorders localize the antiferromagnetic spin-density wave induced by imbalanced fermions and the increase in the disorder magnitude shrinks the areas of the localized antiferromagnetized regions. Moreover, the antiferromagnetism finally disappears above a large disorder. The localization behaviors are observable in atomic Fermi gases loaded on optical lattices as broadening of the momentum distribution of the spin density by using the Stern-Gerlach type of time-of-flight imaging.

Degenerate Fermi Gas of Sr87

B. J. DeSalvo, Mi Yan, Pascal G. Mickelson +2 more

We report quantum degeneracy in a gas of ultracold fermionic (87)Sr atoms. By evaporatively cooling a mixture of spin states in an optical dipole trap for 10.5 s, we obtain samples well into the degenerate regime with T/T(F)=0.26(-0.06)(+0.05). The main signature of degeneracy is a change in the momentum distribution as measured by time-of-flight imaging, and we also observe a decrease in evaporation efficiency below T/T(F) ∼0.5.
