The Hypernetted Chain Equations for Periodic Systems

Abstract

Starting from the general inhomogeneous Fermi hypernetted chain equations, the equations for periodic systems are derived by simple Fourier transform. It is shown how the symmetry reduces the size of the involved quantities. First results for a one-dimensional (1D) model system are presented. The results allow a reliable estimation of the numerical demand even for realistic 3D systems, such as solids. It is shown that treatment of this systems is feasible with moderate computational resources.

Fermi hypernetted-chain theory for correlated spin-density-wave states

X. Q. G. Wang, Stefano Fantoni, Erio Tosatti +1 more

The Fermi hypernetted-chain (FHNC) theory is applied to spin-density-wave states combined with a Jastrow-type correlation operator. The commonly used approximation scheme FHNC/n is found to be unsuitable for dealing with this class of correlated wave functions. A new scheme, named FHNC-n, is proposed, and numerically tested for the one-dimensional (1D) Hubbard model and the Gutzwiller correlation operator. The results obtained are in very good agreement with the available variational Monte Carlo calculation. This scheme can be used to study 2D and 3D Hubbard models and can easily be extended to treat more general correlation operators, which include triplet and quartet correlations.

Fermi-hypernetted-chain scheme for Gutzwiller correlated wave functions

X. Q. G. Wang, Stefano Fantoni, Erio Tosatti +1 more

A set of integral equations in the Fermi-hypernetted-chain scheme is formulated for Gutzwiller correlated wave functions. The well-known exact analytical results of Vollhardt, Metzner, and Gebhard for the one- and infinite-dimensional Gutzwiller paramagnetic wave functions are recovered as a byproduct of the theory. In approximate form, the theory is applicable to arbitrary Gutzwiller correlated wave functions, irrespective of the space dimensionality of the model.

Theory of inhomogeneous quantum systems. III. Variational wave functions for Fermi fluids

E. Krotscheck

We develop a general variational theory for inhomogeneous Fermi systems such as the electron gas in a metal surface, the surface of liquid $^{3}\mathrm{He}$, or simple models of heavy nuclei. The ground-state wave function is expressed in terms of two-body correlations, a one-body attenuation factor, and a model-system Slater determinant. Massive partial summations of cluster expansions are performed by means of Born-Green-Yvon and hypernetted-chain techniques. An optimal single-particle basis is generated by a generalized Hartree-Fock equation in which the two-body correlations screen the bare interparticle interaction. The optimization of the pair correlations leads to a state-averaged random-phase-approximation equation and a strictly microscopic determination of the particle-hole interaction.

Gutzwiller approximation in the Fermi hypernetted-chain theory

Xiao-Qian Wang, C. E. Campbell

We present a general formalism for the variational calculation of the one-body density-matrix and correlation functions for strongly correlated lattice electrons in terms of the Fermi hypernetted-chain (FHNC) diagrammatic expansion. It is shown that, in the limit of infinite spatial dimensions, the local-field-approximate FHNC scheme yields the exact solution for the Gutzwiller wave function, which is equivalent to the result of the Gutzwiller approximation.

Fermion hypernetted chain equations for the three-body distribution

Gary G. Hoffman

The fermion hypernetted chain equations for the three-body distribution function are derived in this paper. These equations are relatively complicated and some care is required for their derivation. The formulas are presented explicitly and an outline for their practical implementation discussed.

Neutron matter calculations by the Fermi-hypernetted-chain method

Børge Arntsen, Erlend Østgaard

The Fermi-hypernetted-chain method for quantum many-body calculations is studied and investigated in some detail by calculations of the ground-state energy for neutron matter. The calculations are done for five different two-body potentials and results are compared with other theoretical results. Our Fermi-hypernetted-chain results are rather close to results obtained by lowest-order constrained variation calculations, and the results are quite dependent on the chosen potential, especially at high densities.
