The role of disorder symmetry in a dirty superconductor: a Bogoliubov-deGennes (BdG) study

Sanjeev Kumar, Chakraborty, Prabuddha B.

We study the effect of disorder symmetry in a disordered s-wave superconductor. We begin with an attractive Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice in the presence of diagonal- and off-diagonal disorder. The model is studied numerically using Bogoliubov-deGennes mean-field approach. We find that the off-diagonal disorder is much more efficient in destroying superconducting order. A detailed analysis brings out very distinct qualitative pictures in the two cases: diagonal disorder leads to formation of small scale isolated superconducting islands separated by large region of normal metal, whereas off-diagonal disorder leads to a connected network of superconducting region. Naively, it seems that the connected network of superconducting regions should have a large average value for superconducting order parameter, but this does not hold true for large disorder, as we demonstrate explicitly. Our qualititive picture is supported by real-space data on local order parameters.

The influence of strong diagonal disorder on superconductivity in the 2D attractive-U Hubbard model at low electron density

M. Yu. Kagan, E. A. Mazur

The properties of a two-dimensional low density (n<<1) electron system with strong onsite Hubbard attraction U>W (W is the bandwidth) in the presence of a strong random potential V uniformly distributed in the range from -V to +V are considered. Electronic hoppings only at neighboring sites on the square lattice are taken into account, thus W=8t. The calculations were carried out for a lattice of 24x24 sites with periodic boundary conditions. In the framework of the Bogoliubov - de Gennes approach we observed an appearance of inhomogeneous state of spatially separated Fermi-Bose mixture of Cooper pairs and unpaired electrons with the formation of bosonic droplets of different size in the unpaired fermionic matrix. We observed an increase in the droplet size (from individual bielectronic pairs to larger droplets and finally to the percolation cluster) when we increase the electron density at fixed values of the Hubbard attraction and random potential.

Superconductivity in the kagome Hubbard model under the flat-band-preserving disorder

Jicheol Kim, Dong-Hee Kim

We investigate the disordered flat-band superconductivity within the attractive Hubbard model on the kagome lattice by contrasting the flat-band-preserving disorder [Phys. Rev. B 98, 235109 (2018)] with the random hopping disorder that breaks the flat-band degeneracy. Through Bogoliubov-de Gennes mean-field calculations, we find that the superfluid weight is much more robust under the flat-band-preserving disorder, while the system eventually undergoes a transition to an insulator as disorder becomes strong enough. The almost linear interaction-dependence of the superfluid weight in the weak coupling limit found with the flat-band-preserving disorder confirms the persistent flat-band signature, whereas the exponential behavior of a dispersive-band character arises with the random hopping counterpart. In addition, in the exact diagonalization of the one-particle density matrix, we identify an occupation spectrum structure attributed to the flat-band states, demonstrating the connection between the resilient flat band and the enhanced robustness of superconductivity.
