Spin-momentum coupled Bose-Einstein condensates with lattice band pseudospins

M. A. Khamehchi, Chunlei Qu, Maren Mossman +2 more

The quantum emulation of spin-momentum coupling, a crucial ingredient for the emergence of topological phases, is currently drawing considerable interest. In previous quantum gas experiments, typically two atomic hyperfine states were chosen as pseudospins. Here, we report the observation of a spin-momentum coupling achieved by loading a Bose-Einstein condensate into periodically driven optical lattices. The s and p bands of a static lattice, which act as pseudospins, are coupled through an additional moving lattice that induces a momentum-dependent coupling between the two pseudospins, resulting in s-p hybrid Floquet-Bloch bands. We investigate the band structures by measuring the quasimomentum of the Bose-Einstein condensate for different velocities and strengths of the moving lattice, and compare our measurements to theoretical predictions. The realization of spin-momentum coupling with lattice bands as pseudospins paves the way for engineering novel quantum matter using hybrid orbital bands.

Soliton in Bose-Einstein condensates with helicoidal spin-orbit coupling under a Zeeman lattice

Pingping Fang, Ji Lin

We investigate the existence and stability of higher-order bright solitons, stripe solitons, and bright-dark solitons in a Bose-Einstein condensate with helicoidal spin-orbit coupling under a Zeeman lattice using numerical methods. The higher-order bright solitons that exist in the first-finite energy gap are stable except near the edge. The stripe solitons with parity-time symmetry and pseudospin-parity symmetry have partially overlapping norm curves; they are stable in the lower edge of the first-finite energy gap. Additionally, the bright-dark solitons discovered in the system not only exist within energy gaps but also embed within energy bands as they have periodic backgrounds. These findings offer insights into the diversity and behavior of solitons within energy bands and contribute to a deeper understanding of their distribution and dynamics.

Bose-Einstein condensates in spin-orbit-coupled optical lattices: Flat bands and superfluidity

Yongping Zhang, Chuanwei Zhang

Recently spin-orbit (SO)-coupled superfluids in free space or harmonic traps have been extensively studied, motivated by the recent experimental realization of SO coupling for Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC). However, the rich physics of SO-coupled BEC in optical lattices has been largely unexplored. In this paper, we show that in a suitable parameter region the lowest Bloch state forms an isolated flat band in a one-dimensional SO-coupled optical lattice, which thus provides an experimentally feasible platform for exploring the recently celebrated topological flatband physics in lattice systems. We show that the flat band is preserved even with the mean-field interaction in BEC. We investigate the superfluidity of the BEC in SO-coupled lattices through dynamical and Landau stability analysis, and show that the BEC is stable on the whole flat band.
