Quantum interference of multidimensional quantum states via space-division multiplexing of a long-coherent single photon from a warm 87 Rb atomic ensemble

Changhoon Baek, Jin‐Hyuk Bae, Jiho Park +1 more

The high-dimensional encoding of single photons can offer various possibilities for enhancing quantum information processing. This work experimentally demonstrates the quantum interference of an engineered multidimensional quantum state through the space-division multiplexing of a heralded single-photon state with a spatial light modulator (SLM) and spatial-mode mixing of a single photon through a long multimode fiber (MMF). In our experiment, the heralded single photon generated from a warm 87 Rb atomic ensemble was bright, robust, and long-coherent. The multidimensional spatial quantum state of the long-coherent single photon was transported through a 4-m-long MMF and arbitrarily controlled using the SLM. We observed the quantum interference of a single-photon multidimensional spatial quantum state with a visibility of >95%. These results may have potential applications in quantum information processing, for example, in photonic variational quantum eigensolve with high-dimensional single photons and realizing high information capacity per photon for quantum communication.

Photon statistics and polarization correlations at telecommunications wavelengths from a warm atomic ensemble

R. T. Willis, F. E. Becerra, Luis A. Orozco +1 more

We present measurements of the polarization correlation and photon statistics of photon pairs that emerge from a laser-pumped warm rubidium vapor cell. The photon pairs occur at 780 nm and 1367 nm and are polarization entangled. We measure the autocorrelation of each of the generated fields as well as the cross-correlation function, and observe a strong violation of the two-beam Cauchy-Schwartz inequality. We evaluate the performance of the system as source of heralded single photons at a telecommunication wavelength. We measure the heralded autocorrelation and see that coincidences are suppressed by a factor of ≈ 20 from a Poissonian source at a generation rate of 1500 s(-1), a heralding efficiency of 10%, and a narrow spectral width.

Toward heralded single-photon storage via chiral cavity-enhanced spontaneous Raman scattering

Can Sun, Yi‐bo Hou, Xiang Chen +6 more

We propose a scheme of heralded storages of single photons via spontaneous Raman scattering (SRS) enhanced by a chiral standing-wave cavity, which creates a non-classically correlated pair of a spin wave and a Stokes photon (heralded photon) when a single-photon “write” pulse is applied to an atomic ensemble. In this scheme, to decrease the power of the write pulse for SRS, the write laser and the Stokes fields are aligned to propagate near-collinearly through the atoms. The short storage lifetime remains a challenge in standing-wave cavity-enhanced SRS. To prolong the storage lifetime, we achieve a long-wavelength spin-wave memory by removing the backward-scattering Stokes field from the cavity, which is realized by using non-reciprocal couplings between the Stokes fields and the atoms. In the experiment, the memory lifetime is demonstrated up to ∼100 μs, which is beyond the limitation (∼350 ns) of the storage in the atomic ensembles coupled to standing-wave cavities. We achieve a spin-wave memory for the write pulse containing a mean photon number of ∼4. The quantum correlation of the Stokes-spin-wave pairs is beyond 2, which gives strong evidence of non-classical behavior.
