Abstract

A P French and P J Kennedy (eds) 1985 London: Harvard University Press 403 pp price £16.50 ISBN 0 674 62415 7 It should be said at the outset that this is a remarkable book – all that one could hope for in celebration of such an important occasion. Not only is it edited with great originality and flair but it has been splendidly produced.

D R Murdoch 1987 Cambridge: Cambridge University Press x + 294 pp price £32.50 ISBN 0 521 33320 2 Bohr was sad that philosophers showed so little appreciation of his 'complementarity', but here is a book-length study by a professional philosopher, following closely on another by Henry J Folse. Both authors find great efforts are required to penetrate the 'notorious obscurity' of Bohr's writings, but both admire very much what they then discover.

By Niels Bohr London: John Wiley & Sons Ltd. 1964 . Pp. x + 100. Price 30s. In an ideal (academic) world, honours students in their final year would be expected to regard the reading of this slight book as a 'must'. But if slight in bulk it is weighty in significance, as one would expect it to be, almost the last will and testament of a master mind.

Niels Bohr: Collected Works Vol I

Eric Deeson

J R Nielsen (ed) Amsterdam: North-Holland 1972 pp xlvii + 608 price £7 To many physicists the life of Bohr epitomizes the development of 'modern' physics throughout this century. With a working career running from about 1905 to a decade ago, with important contributions made in a number of fields, and with close contacts with so many contemporary giants, this epitomization is not at all invalid.
