High-resolution imaging of ultracold fermions in microscopically tailored optical potentials

B Zimmermann, Torben Müller, Jakob Meineke +2 more

We report on the local probing and preparation of an ultracold Fermi gas on the length scale of one micrometer, i.e. of the order of the Fermi wavelength. The essential tool of our experimental setup is a pair of identical, high-resolution microscope objectives. One of the microscope objectives allows local imaging of the trapped Fermi gas of 6 Li atoms with a maximum resolution of 660 nm, while the other enables the generation of arbitrary optical dipole potentials on the same length scale. Employing a two-dimensional (2D) acousto-optical deflector, we demonstrate the formation of several trapping geometries, including a tightly focused single optical dipole trap, a 4 × 4 site 2D optical lattice and an 8 site ring lattice configuration. Furthermore, we show the ability to load and detect a small number of atoms in these trapping potentials. A site separation down to one micrometer in combination with the low mass of 6 Li results in tunneling rates that are sufficiently large for the implementation of Hubbard models with the designed geometries.

Ultracold atomic Bose and Fermi spinor gases in optical lattices

K. Eckert, Łukasz Zawitkowski, M. J. Leskinen +2 more

We investigate magnetic properties of Mott-insulating phases of ultracold Bose and Fermi spinor gases in optical lattices. We consider in particular the F = 2 Bose gas, and the F = 3/2 and 5/2 Fermi gases. We derive effective spin Hamiltonians for one and two atoms per site and discuss the possibilities of manipulating the magnetic properties of the system using optical Feshbach resonances. We discuss low temperature quantum phases of a Rb-87 gas in the F = 2 hyperfine state, as well as possible realizations of high spin Fermi gases with either Li-6 or Cs-132 atoms in the F = 3/2 state, and with Yb-173 atoms in the F = 5/2 state.
