Abstract

We present a new compact optical scheme which facilitates one single-photon source. This configuration could generate states of any number of photons. The scheme basic operation is experimentally demonstrated with its sensitivity to imperfections considered.

Simple source for large linear cluster photonic states

The experimental realization of many-body entangled states is one of the main goals of quantum technology as these states are a key resource for quantum computation and quantum sensing. However, increasing the number of photons in an entangled state has been proved to be a painstakingly hard task. This is a result of the nondeterministic emission of current photon sources and the distinguishability between photons from different sources. Moreover, the generation rate and the complexity of the optical setups hinder scalability. Here we present a scheme that is compact, requires a very modest number of components, and avoids the distinguishability issues by using only one single-photon source. States of any number of photons are generated with the same configuration, with no need for increasing the optical setup. The basic operation of this scheme is experimentally demonstrated, and its sensitivity to imperfections is considered.

How Good Must Single Photon Sources and Detectors Be for Efficient Linear Optical Quantum Computation?

Michael Varnava, Dan E. Browne, Terry Rudolph

We present a scheme for linear optical quantum computation that is highly robust to imperfect single photon sources and inefficient detectors. In particular we show that if the product of the detector efficiency with the source efficiency is greater than 2/3, then efficient linear optical quantum computation is possible. This high threshold is achieved within the cluster state paradigm for quantum computation.

We create 6-photon linear cluster states using a resource-efficient quantum dot single photon source and linear optics setup. Shorter, high-rate, states created in the process give indications on the quality of alignment and interference for optimization.
