Abstract

The studies of interactions of electromagnetic fields with two level atom systems is a main theme of quantum optics. Here, we shows how the inherent dissipation of atom influences the interaction between atom and single photon propagating in the waveguide. Based on a fully quantum mechanical theory in real space, we exactly calculated the transportation probability of a single photon for a two-level atom system next to the waveguide. We find that the existence of a dissipated atom can be utilized to act as the light router as well as the beam splitter, if properly adjust relationship of atom dissipation 􀟛􀯤and coupling strengthV between atom and single photon in waveguide.

Single photon scattering in a pair of coupled-resonator waveguides coupled to a quantum emitter

Yan‐Yan Song

We theoretically investigate the single photon scattering in a pair of coupled-resonator waveguides coupled to a two-level quantum emitter. It reveals that the incident photon transporting probabilities can be controlled by adjusting the coupling strength between the two-level system and the coupled-resonator waveguide. Two optical nano-devices, quantum optical switch and beam splitter are proposed. In addition, the influence of the dissipation of the two-level system on the photon transporting properties is also analyzed.

Controlling single-photon transport properties in a waveguide coupled with two separated atoms

Xiao Fei Zang, Tao Zhou, Bin Cai +1 more

Based on the symmetric, asymmetric atom–photon couplings and the phase difference between two separated atoms, single-photon transport properties in an optical waveguide coupled with two separated two-level atoms are theoretically investigated. The transmission and reflection amplitudes for the single-photon propagation in such a hybrid system are deduced via a real-space approach. Several new phenomena such as phase-coupled induced transparency, single-photon switches, symmetric and asymmetric bifrequency photon attenuators are analyzed. In addition, the dissipation effect of such a hybrid system is also discussed.

Theory of single-photon transport in a single-mode waveguide. I. Coupling to a cavity containing a two-level atom

Jung‐Tsung Shen, Shanhui Fan

The single-photon transport in a single-mode waveguide, coupled to a cavity embedded with a two-level atom, is analyzed. The single-photon transmission and reflection amplitudes, as well as the cavity and the atom excitation amplitudes, are solved exactly via a real-space approach. It is shown that the dissipations of the cavity and of the atom, respectively, affect distinctively on the transport properties of the photons and on the relative phase between the excitation amplitudes of the cavity mode and the atom.

Fully quantum-mechanical analytic results for single-photon transport in a single-mode waveguide coupled to a whispering-gallery resonator interacting with a two-level atom

Jung‐Tsung Shen, Shanhui Fan

We analyze the single-photon transport in a single-mode waveguide coupled to a whispering-gallery-type resonator interacting with a two-level atom. The single-photon transport properties such as the transmission and reflection amplitudes, as well as the resonator and the atom responses, are solved exactly via a real-space approach. The treatment includes the inter-mode backscattering between the two degenerate whispering gallery modes of the resonator, and the dissipations of the resonator and the atom. We also show that a generalized critical coupling condition, that the single-photon transmission at the output of the waveguide goes to zero on resonance for a matched system, holds for the full coupled waveguide-ring resonator-atom system.

Phase-modulated single-photon router

De-Chun Yang, Mu-Tian Cheng, Xiao-San Ma +3 more

The single-photon routing properties in the system composed of two waveguides and two coupled cavities interacting with a two-level system are investigated theoretically. The phases of the coupling strengths are considered. The analytical expressions for the single-photon routing probabilities are obtained. The study shows that single-photon routing in a single waveguide or between two waveguides can be switched on or off by modulating the phase difference between the coupling constants. The analytical results also exhibit that the coupling between the two nanocavities plays an important role in the phase-dependent single-photon routing. We also show numerically the influence of the dissipation of cavities and atoms on routing properties. Our results may be useful in controlling and manipulating light-matter interactions based on waveguides at the single-photon level.
