Very large optical rotation generated by Rb vapor in a multi-pass cell

S. Li, Pranjal Vachaspati, Sheng, D. +2 more

Paramagnetic Faraday rotation is a powerful technique for atom sensing widely used in quantum non-demolition measurements, fundamental symmetry tests, and other precision measurements. We demonstrate the use of a multi-pass optical cell for Faraday rotation spectroscopy and observe polarization rotation in excess of 100 radians from spin-polarized Rb vapor. Unlike optical cavities, multi-pass cells have a deterministic number of light passes and can be used to measure large optical rotations. We also observe a 10-fold suppression of transverse spin relaxation when Rb atoms are placed in a coherent superposition state immune to spin-exchange collisions.

Measurements of Temporal Fluctuations of Magnetization in Alkali Vapor and Applications

Maheswar Swar, Dibyendu Roy, Dhamodaran Dhanalakshmi +3 more

We describe a relatively non-invasive optical spectroscopy technique, known as spin noise spectroscopy (SNS), to probe spontaneous magnetization fluctuations in an alkali atomic vapor at thermal equilibrium. The atomic magnetization at a non-zero temperature fluctuates about its equilibrium value, and such magnetization (spin) noise imparts fluctuation in the measured Faraday rotation of a far-detuned, linearly polarized probe laser beam passing through the vapor. This Faraday rotation fluctuation reveals the intrinsic spin dynamics of the electrons in the alkali vapor. We present a systematic experimental study of the SNS realized in thermal rubidium vapor and illustrate how one can measure various magnetic and chemical properties of the sample with minimal perturbation. We also demonstrate the applicability of this spectroscopy technique in measuring the spin populations and their dynamics in different hyperfine and magnetic levels by optically pumping the atomic system.
