Bound States Energies of a Harmonic Oscillator Perturbed by Point Interactions*

Abstract

Abstract We determine explicitly the exact transcendental bound states energies equation for a one-dimensional harmonic oscillator perturbed by a single and a double point interactions via Green’s function techniques using both momentum and position space representations. The even and odd solutions of the problem are discussed. The corresponding limiting cases are recovered. For the harmonic oscillator with a point interaction in more than one dimension, divergent series appear. We use to remove this divergence an exponential regulator and we obtain a transcendental equation for the energy bound states. The results obtained here are consistent with other investigations using different methods.

The Quantum Harmonic Oscillator with λδ' (x) Potential

M A Dalabeeh

Abstract: In this work, the problem of the quantum harmonic oscillator with a delta-derivative potential λδ^' (x), where λ is a coupling constant, is solved using the Green’s function technique. A transcendental equation that governs the energy eigenvalues of the problems for each coupling constant is obtained. The eigenfunctions and their first derivative are proved to be discontinuous at the origin. The values of the discontinuity jumps are found to agree with the requirements of having a self-adjoint extension Hamiltonian. In the large coupling limit, the even energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for the quantum harmonic oscillator are annihilated, and only the odd parts survive. The dependence of the energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions on the sign of λ was made clear. A mapping between the sign of λ and the positions of the particle was used to explain the discontinuity of the solution. In the large-λ regime, an educated guess for the wave functions was proposed. The proposed solutions led to the correct energy eigenvalues and obeyed the required conditions to have a self-adjoint extension Hamiltonian.

The Quantum Harmonic Oscillator

Reinhold A. Bertlmann, Nicolai Friis

Abstract We consider the time-independent Schrödinger equation for the harmonic oscillator potential and determine its bound states and energy levels in one spatial dimension using two approaches: the algebraic and the analytic method. Using the former, we introduce ladder operators: the annihilation and creation operators, as well as the occupation-number operator, and determine the ground state of the harmonic oscillator to be a Gaussian wave packet, while the latter method yields the general bound state solutions in terms of the Hermite polynomials. We further discuss the zero-point energy and uncertainty relation for the quantum harmonic oscillator and make a comparison to the classical harmonic oscillator. Finally, we examine the three-dimensional harmonic oscillator, which leads us to the description of systems with multiple degrees of freedom via the tensor product

A generalized harmonic oscillator problem for a spin-1/2 fermion

V. B. Mendrot, A. S. de Castro, P. Alberto

The exact bound-state wavefunctions and the corresponding energy equation are calculated for a new generalized harmonic oscillator problem describing a spin-1/2 fermion in 3+1-dimensions, involving scalar, vector, and tensor couplings acting simultaneously within a particular plane of motion. For the scalar and vector coupling, singular harmonic oscillator shapes are considered, such that the singular term is needed to allow analytical solutions for the wavefunctions while preserving binding under adequate conditions. For the tensor sector, the Dirac oscillator potential is employed, which adds another independent binding mechanism to the problem. The exact bound-state solutions are computed by specifically tuning coefficients for an appropriate pair of \textit{Ansätze} for the radial functions, which leads to wavefunctions in terms of generalized Laguerre polynomials. Although the energy equation cannot provide a general expression for the energy spectrum, specific constraints on the quantum numbers as simple functions of the external potential parameters can be derived for it, which determines the conditions for bound solutions to exist, and of what type: particle, antiparticle or both. It is shown that the results can be simply mapped to the spherically symmetric analogue problem, and this is used to show that the general result encompass several previous particular cases of spherically symmetric harmonic oscillator problems in the Dirac equation available in the literature.

Approximate analytic solution of the Logunov–Tavkhelidze equation for a one-dimensional oscillator potential in the relativistic configuration representation

Yu. A. Grishechkin, V. N. Kapshaǐ

We construct approximate analytic solutions of the Logunov–Tavkhelidze equation in the case of a potential that, in the one-dimensional relativistic configuration representation, has the form analogous to the potential of the nonrelativistic harmonic oscillator in the coordinate representation. The wave functions are obtained in both the momentum and relativistic configuration representations. The approximate values of the energy of the relativistic harmonic oscillator are the roots of transcendental equations. The wave functions in the relativistic configuration representation have additional zeros in comparison with the wave functions of the corresponding states of the nonrelativistic harmonic oscillator in the coordinate representation.

Perturbation Theory for Time-Dependent Point Interactions with Discrete Spectrum

Kaya Güven Akbaş, Fatih Erman, O. Teoman Turgut

We develop a perturbative framework for time-dependent point interactions in quantum systems with purely discrete unperturbed spectrum. In two and three dimensions the point interaction is described through the renormalized resolvent obtained from heat-kernel regularization, while in one dimension the diagonal Green function is finite and no renormalization is required. Time dependence is introduced either through the interaction parameter or through the motion of the support point. In both cases we expand the non-autonomous Hamiltonian in the spectral basis of the corresponding static point-interaction problem and derive the first- and second-order pole shifts, projection corrections, and transition amplitudes. We also describe how finite degeneracies are treated by separating the coupled point-interaction direction from the unaffected orthogonal subspace in each degenerate eigenspace. The method is illustrated by explicit examples: point interactions with time-dependent coupling, harmonic oscillators perturbed by moving point interactions, and a particle on a sphere with a moving interaction center. We also discuss the one-dimensional harmonic oscillator with a moving delta potential, showing that in the non-renormalized case the present formulation reduces to the standard time-dependent perturbation theory. Finally, an exactly solvable delta center moving with constant velocity on a circle is used as a discrete-spectrum example for the local moving-center expansion and its velocity-dependent dynamical corrections.

Bound states ofn-dimensional harmonic oscillator decorated with Dirac delta functions

Ersan Demiralp

Bound state solutions of the Schrödinger equation have been investigated for n -dimensional ( n ⩾ 2) harmonic oscillator potential decorated with any finite number ( P ) of Dirac delta functions. The potential is radially symmetric and given as , where σ i s are arbitrary real numbers, r 1 < r 2 < ⋅⋅⋅ < r P and r i ∊ (0, + ∞). We have demonstrated that addition of Dirac delta functions lifts the accidental degeneracies of n -dimensional harmonic oscillator energy levels and leaves only the degeneracy due to the radial symmetry. Explicit forms of bound state eigenfunctions and the eigenvalue equation are given for n , l values, where n is the space dimension and l is the degree of n -dimensional spherical harmonics. We have shown that, for given n and l , there are a countably infinite number of bound state energy levels which are continuous functions of ω, σ i s and at most P of them can be negative.
