Abstract

We study the properties of elongated Bose-Einstein condensates. First, we show that the dimensions of the condensate after expansion differs from the 3D Thomas-Fermi regime. We also study the coherence length of such elongated condensates. 1

Maximal length of trapped one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates

Uwe R. Fischer

I discuss a Bogoliubov inequality for obtaining a rigorous bound on the maximal axial extension of inhomogeneous one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates. An explicit upper limit for the aspect ratio of a strongly elongated, harmonically trapped Thomas-Fermi condensate is derived. The question on the existence and dimension dependence of off-diagonal long-range order, for an infinitely extended system of scalar uncharged bosons, was conclusively answered by Hohenberg 1. He made use of the fact that in the thermodynamic limit of an infinite system of interacting particles of bare mass m, the relation (we set = kB = 1 in what follows, where kB is the Boltzmann constant) Nk ≥ − 1 mT 2 k2 n0

Highly anisotropic Bose-Einstein condensates: Crossover to lower dimensionality

Kunal K. Das

We develop a simple analytical model based on a variational method to explain the properties of trapped cylindrically symmetric Bose-Einstein condensates of varying degrees of anisotropy, well into the regimes of effective one dimension and effective two dimensions. Our results are accurate in regimes where the Thomas-Fermi approximation breaks down and they are shown to be in agreement with recent experimental data. We also present analytic expressions for various ground-state properties and quasiparticle excitations valid for highly anisotropic condensates.

One-dimensional model for the dynamics and expansion of elongated Bose-Einstein condensates

Pietro Massignan, Michele Modugno

We present a one-dimensional (1D) effective model for the evolution of a cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate in time-dependent potentials whose radial component is harmonic. We apply this model to investigate the dynamics and expansion of condensates in 1D optical lattices, by comparing our predictions with recent experimental data and theoretical results. We also discuss negative-mass effects which could be probed during the expansion of a condensate moving in an optical lattice.

Atom lasers from elongated quasi-condensates

Phase fluctuations are characteristic of Bose-Einstein condensates in lower dimensions. We use atom laser output from condensates and quasi-condensates to probe their axial phase coherence properties.

Phase coherence length of a Bose-Einstein condensate

Fabrice Gerbier, S. Richard, Joseph H. Thywissen +3 more

We report on the measurement of the momentum distribution of an elongated Bose-Einstein condensate. A broadening of the distribution with increasing temperature is observed, which is clear evidence for phase fluctuations in the sample.
