Effect of an interchain magnetic interaction on the dimerized state of a two-XY-quantum-spin-chain ladder

Laurent Hubert, A. Caillé

The model that we study is a two-XY-quantum-spin-chain system with Ising interchain magnetic interaction. This model, referred to as the spin-ladder model, is used as a first step to model the thermodynamic properties of low-dimensional spin system. Similarities between the spin-ladder model and the one-dimensional Hubbard model are used in our analysis. As a consequence we can qualitatively understand the heat capacity and spin susceptibilty and show that both measurements are necessary to analyze a spin-ladder system. We also show that the strong-interchain-coupling limit of the spin-ladder model is equivalent to a one-chain spin Heisenberg Hamiltonian. Furthermore, the spin-Peierls transition is investigated for small (\ensuremath{\Vert}I/2J\ensuremath{\Vert}\ensuremath{\ll}1) and large (\ensuremath{\Vert}I/2J\ensuremath{\Vert}\ensuremath{\gg}1) interchain coupling, and we show its occurrence at relatively small spin-phonon coupling (\ensuremath{\lambda}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.6). From the results obtained for the small- and large-interchain-interaction limits, we propose the conjecture that the in-phase dimerization persists for all values of the interaction parameter at zero temperature.

Thermodynamical properties of a spin- 1 2 Heisenberg chain coupled to phonons

Rainer Walter Kühne, U. Löw

We performed a finite-temperature quantum Monte Carlo simulation of the one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg model with nearest-neighbor interaction coupled to Einstein phonons. Our method allows to treat easily up to 100 phonons per site and the results presented are practically free from truncation errors. We studied in detail the magnetic susceptibility, the specific heat, the phonon occupation, the dimerization, and the spin-correlation function for various spin-phonon couplings and phonon frequencies. In particular we give evidence for the transition from a gapless to a massive phase by studying the finite-size behavior of the susceptibility. We also show that the dimerization is proportional to g2/Ω for T<2J.

Thermodynamics of Heisenberg chains coupled to phonons

Rainer Walter Kühne

The one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg model with nearest-neighbour interaction coupled to Einstein phonons is of interest for the understanding of materials which show the spin-Peierls phase transition. I examined this model by performing a finite-temperature quantum Monte Carlo simulation by using the very efficient loop algorithm. I studied in detail the magnetic susceptibility, the specific heat, the phonon occupation, the dimerization, and the spin-spin correlation function of this model for various spin-phonon couplings and phonon frequencies. In particular I gave evidence for a global effective spin-spin coupling and for the transition from a gapless to the massive phase by studying the finite-size behavior of the magnetic susceptibility.
