Abstract

Physical layer secret key generation techniques have spurred much recent research interest. In general, the secret key establishment contains four main procedures: channel sounding, quantization, information reconciliation and privacy amplification. However, to overcome the non- reciprocity and correlation problems in key generation from orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) channels, a preprocessing procedure is added to prepare inputs for quantization. This paper demonstrates the optimal preprocessing approach in secret key generation and addresses its practical problems in realization. More specifically, we first build the mathematical model of a preprocessing procedure. Then, we identify that principle component analysis (PCA) can achieve the optimal performance in this model from the perspective of secret key capacity. Next, we discuss the realization steps of PCA algorithm and the corresponding procedures to cooperate with it. The parameter design in matrix partitioning and covariance matrix calculation are also analyzed. Numerical results verify that the proposed PCA preprocessing outperforms other tall unitary transforms and thus, it can be used to generate secret key with high key generation rate (KGR), low key error rate (KER) and good randomness.

High-Agreement Uncorrelated Secret Key Generation Based on Principal Component Analysis Preprocessing

Guyue Li, Aiqun Hu, Junqing Zhang +3 more

Random and high-agreement secret key generation from noisy wideband channels is challenging due to the autocorrelation inside the channel samples and compromised cross correlation between channel measurements of two keying parties. This paper studies the signal preprocessing algorithms to establish high-agreement uncorrelated secret key in the presence of channel independent eavesdroppers. We first propose a general mathematical model for various preprocessing schemes, including principal component analysis (PCA), discrete cosine transform (DCT) and wavelet transform (WT). Among preprocessing schemes, PCA is proved to achieve the optimal secret key rate. Next, PCA with common eigenvector has been found to outperform PCA with private eigenvector in terms of an overall consideration of key agreement, information leakage, and computational expense. Then, we propose a system level design of key generation, including quantization, information reconciliation, and privacy amplification. Numerical results verify that the key generation enhanced by PCA with common eigenvector can achieve secret key with high key generation rate, low key error rate, and good randomness.

A Novel Secret Key Generation Method in OFDM System for Physical Layer Security

Dong Wang, Aiqun Hu, Linning Peng

In this paper, a novel physical layer key generation method for extracting secret key from mutual channel information in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems has been proposed. Firstly, a well-designed data extraction process has been introduced to reduce the redundancy and inconsistency of channel state information (CSI). After that, a new quantization method using gray code is proposed. Furthermore, an associated method is designed to reduce key error rate (KER). With these improvements, higher key generation rate (KGR) can be obtained compared to existing methods. Finally, available secret keys have been generated after information reconciliation and privacy amplification. The proposed method has been analyzed and verified in long term evolution advanced (LTE-A) systems and the generated secret keys have passed randomness test.

Scramble-Based Secret Key Generation Algorithm in Physical Layer Security

Dan Wang, Feng Chen, Yongtai Chen +2 more

As a new way to enhance wireless communication security, secret key generation based on physical layer channel characteristics has emerged. In this paper, we propose a novel secret key generation algorithm based on wireless channel characteristics for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication systems. The mean quantization algorithm is applied to quantize the real part and imaginary part of OFDM subcarriers, respectively, which can significantly increase the length of the generated secret key in the OFDM system. To reduce the consistency between the secret keys generated by the eavesdropper and the legitimate communication nodes, a processing method by taking the subcarrier phase as initialization of a scrambling code and scrambling the quantized result is proposed. The simulation and test results show that compared with the existing research, the proposed algorithm can improve the key generation rate (KGR), reduce the key mismatch rate (KMR) and complexity, maintain high randomness, and disturb the eavesdroppers.

Optimal Singular Value Decomposition Based Pre-coding for Secret Key Extraction from Correlated Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing Sub-channels

Amir Aliabadian, Mohammad Reza Zahabi, Majid Mobini

Secret key extraction is a crucial issue in physical layer security and a less complex and, at the same time, a more robust scheme for the next generation of 5G and beyond. Unlike previous works on this topic, in which Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) sub-channels were considered to be independent, the effect of correlation between sub-channels on the secret key rate is addressed in this paper. As an assumption, a realistic model for dependency among sub-channels is considered. Benchmarked by simulation, the result shows that the key exchange rate may decline by up to 72% due to the correlation of sub-channels. A new approach for efficient key extraction is used in this study. To do this, a Singular Value Decomposition based (SVD-based) pre-coding is utilized to alleviate the sub-channels correlation and the channel noise. The low computational complexity of our proposed approach makes it a promising candidate for developing secure and high-speed networks. Results obtained through simulation indicate that applying pre-coding on the measured correlated data resulted in a minimum gain of 9 dB. In addition, the result also depicts the advantage of SVD versus other pre-coding techniques, namely PCA, DCT, and WT.

A New Scheme for Improving Channel-Based Secret Key Generation Rates

Jehad M. Hamamreh, Haji Muhammad Furqan

Physical layer key generation from the wireless channel is an emerging area of interest to provide confidentiality and authentication. One of the main challenges in this domain is to increase the length of the generated secret key while maintaining its randomness and uniformity. In this letter, new dimensions for wireless channel-based key generation are proposed for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The novel perspective of the proposed work lies in the generation of key bits not only from the magnitudes of OFDM subchannels as it has conventionally been done but also from the number and positions/indices of those subchannels, whose channel gains are above the mean of the respective subblock. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithms is evaluated in terms of key generation rate and key mismatch rate. It is shown in the simulation results that the involvement of the proposed dimensions can double the key generation rate compared to conventional algorithms.

Efficient Key Generation by Exploiting Randomness From Channel Responses of Individual OFDM Subcarriers

Junqing Zhang, Alan Marshall, Roger Woods +1 more

Key generation from the randomness of wireless channels is a promising technique to establish a secret cryptographic key securely between legitimate users. This paper proposes a new approach to extract keys efficiently from the channel responses of individual orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) subcarriers. The efficiency is achieved by: 1) fully exploiting randomness from time and frequency domains and 2) improving the cross-correlation of the channel measurements. Through the theoretical modeling of the time and frequency autocorrelation relationship of the OFDM subcarrier's channel responses, we can obtain the optimal probing rate and use multiple uncorrelated subcarriers as random sources. We also study the effects of non-simultaneous measurements and noise on the cross-correlation of the channel measurements. We find that the cross-correlation is mainly impacted by noise effects in a slow fading channel and use a low-pass filter to reduce the key disagreement rate and extend the system's working signal-to-noise ratio range. The system is evaluated in terms of randomness, key generation rate, and key disagreement rate, verifying that it is feasible to extract randomness from both time and frequency domains of the OFDM subcarrier's channel responses.
