Operator of Time and Generalized Schrödinger Equation

Abstract

The equation describing the change of the state of the quantum system with respect to energy is introduced within the framework of the self-adjoint operator of time in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. In this proposal, the operator of time appears to be the generator of the change of the energy, while the operator of energy that is conjugate to the operator of time generates the time evolution. Two examples, one with discrete time and the other with continuous one, are given and the generalization of Schrödinger equation is proposed.

Time-Evolution as an Operator in Hilbert Spaces with Applications in Quantum Mechanics

Amit Kumar Choudhary, S Musa, S. M Nengem +1 more

ABSTRACT: The main aim of this article is to present the time-evolution as the unitary and self-adjoint operators on Hilbert spaces and to describe its application in the development of quantum mechanics. The initial value problems associated with the quantum mechanical Schrodinger equation, ( ) = ( ) in the Hilbert space is solved by the use of timeevolution. The importance of time-evolution is also seen as the operation of turning machine in quantum mechanics, which is regarded as the time-evolution of the machine control state. Time-evolution of a quantum mechanical system is observed to be unitary and self-adjoint operators of Hilbert space, since it corresponds to an observable, specifically energy position and momentum. It was observed that time-evolution of a quantum mechanical system is generated by a self-adjoint operator, called Hamiltonian, V K H ˆ ˆ ˆ   , expressed by the Schrodinger equation, above.

On the problem of time in quantum mechanics

M Bauer

Abstract The problem of time in quantum mechanics (QM) concerns the fact that in the Schrödinger equation time is a parameter, not an operator. Pauli's objection to a time–energy uncertainty relation analogue to the position–momentum one, conjectured by Heisenberg early on, seemed to exclude the existence of such an operator. However Dirac's formulation of an electron's relativistic QM does allow the introduction of a dynamical time operator that is self-adjoint. Consequently, it can be considered as the generator of a unitary transformation of the system, as well as an additional system observable subject to uncertainty. In the present paper these aspects are examined within the standard framework of relativistic QM.

Study of a self-adjoint operator indicating the direction of time within standard quantum mechanics

Y. Strauss, Jonathan Silman, Shai Machnes +1 more

In [Y. Strauss, Self-adjoint Lyapunov variables, temporal ordering and irreversible representations of Schrödinger evolution, J. Math. Phys. 51 (2010) 022104] a self-adjoint operator was introduced that has the property that it indicates the direction of time within the framework of standard quantum mechanics, in the sense that as a function of time its expectation value decreases monotonically for any initial state. In this paper we study some of this operatorʼs properties. In particular, we derive its spectrum and generalized eigenstates, and treat the example of the free particle.

TIME AS A QUANTUM OBSERVABLE

V. S. Olkhovsky, Erasmo Recami

Some new results are presented and recent developments are reviewed on the study of Time in quantum physics as an observable, canonically conjugate to energy. Operators for the observable Time are investigated in particle and photon quantum theory. In particular, this paper deals with the Hermitian (more precisely, maximal Hermitian, but non-self-adjoint) operator for Time which appears: (i) for particles, in ordinary nonrelativistic quantum mechanics; and (ii) for photons (i.e. in first-quantization quantum electrodynamics). In conclusion, various recent and possible future applications of the time quantum analysis for tunnelling processes, nuclear collisions and systems with (quasi)discrete energy spectra are indicated.

Quantum Mechanical Operator of Time

Slobodan Prvanović

The self-adjoint operator of time in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics is found within the approach where the ordinary Hamiltonian is not taken to be conjugate to time. Quantization of the re-expressed Liouville equation with the total Hamiltonian, consisting of the part that is a conventional function of coordinate and momentum and the part that is conjugate to time, is considered. The von Neumann equation with quantized time is found and discussed from the point of view of exact time measurement.
