Abstract

The nonlinear Landau-Zener tunneling of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of two different of particles in an accelerating optical lattice is investigated. The analytical eigenstates and the tunneling probability are obtained. It is shown that the eigenstates and the tunneling probability are modified dramatically by the interaction of the two different particles.

Nonlinear Landau–Zener Tunnelling with Two and Three-Body Interactions

We investigate the nonlinear Landau–Zener tunnelling of Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) in an accelerating optical lattice with two- and three-body interactions between the particles. The influence of the three-body interaction on the eigenstates and the transition probability are discussed both analytically and numerically. The analytical eigenstates and the tunnelling probability are obtained, which are verified by numerical methods. It is shown that the eigenstates and the tunnelling probability are modified dramatically by three-body interaction.

Tunneling dynamics of Bose—Einstein condensates with higher-order interactions in optical lattice

Lu Tie, Ju-Kui Xue

The nonlinear Landau—Zener tunneling and nonlinear Rabi oscillations of Bose—Einstein condensate (BEC) with higher-order atomic interaction between the Bloch bands in an accelerating optical lattice are discussed. Within the two-level model, the tunneling probability of BEC with higher-order atomic interaction between Bloch bands is obtained. We finds that the tunneling rate is closely related to the higher-order atomic interaction. Furthermore, the nonlinear Rabi oscillations of BEC with higher-order atomic interaction between the bands are discussed by imposing a periodic modulation on the level bias. Analytical expressions of the critical higher-order atomic interaction for suppressing/enhancing the Rabi oscillations are obtained. It is shown that the critical value strongly depends on the modulation parameters (i.e., the modulation amplitude and frequency) and the strength of periodic potential.

Landau–Zener Tunnelling of Two-Component Bose–Einstein Condensates in Optical Lattices

Guan-Qiang Li

We investigate the Landau–Zener tunnelling of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in optical lattices. In the neighborhood of the Brillouin zone edge, the system can be reduced to two coupled nonlinear two-level models. From the models, we calculate the change of the tunnelling probability for each component with the linear sweeping rate. It is found that the probability for each component exhibits regular oscillating behavior for the larger sweeping rate, but for smaller rate the oscillation is irregular. Moreover, the asymmetry of the tunnelling between the two components can be induced by the unbalanced initial populations or the inequality of the two self-interactions when the cross-interaction between the components exists. The result can not be found in the single component BECs.

Nonlinear Landau-Zener tunnelling

Biao Wu

The basic properties of the nonlinear Landau-Zener tunnelling,a new quantum tunnelling phenomenon is reviewed, which is discovered in interacting two-level systems, such as Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices and molecule magnets. It is found that the nonlinearity induced by the repulsive interaction can enhance the tunnelling probability compared to the usual linear Landdau-Zener tunnelling. When the nonlinearity is strong enough, the adiabaticity can break down:an infinitely small external linear force can cause finite tunnelling probability.

Bose-Einstein condensates in 1D optical lattices: nonlinearity and Wannier-Stark spectra

E. Arimondo, D. Ciampini, O. Morsch

We present our experimental investigations on the subject of nonlinearity-modified Bloch-oscillations and of nonlinear Landau-Zener tunneling between two energy bands in a rubidium Bose Einstein condensate in an accelerated periodic potential. Nonlinearity introduces an asymmetry in Landau-Zener tunneling. We also present measurements of resonantly enhanced tunneling between the Wannier-Stark energy levels for Bose-Einstein condensates loaded into an optical lattice.

Nonlinearity-induced effects of Bose-Einstein condensates in periodic potentials

O. Morsch

In BECs, collisions between condensate atoms give rise to a nonlinear contribution to the dynamics which is typically included as a mean-field term in the Schrodinger equation. This nonlinearity leads to a modification of well-known effects associated with matter waves in periodic potentials and adds a number of phenomena that are absent in the linear problem. We focused on the dynamics of a BEC in an accelerated optical lattice. In the linear case, this gives rise to Bloch oscillations and, above a critical acceleration, to Landau-Zener tunneling. In the nonlinear case, the probability for Landau-Zener tunneling is modified depending on the direction in which it occurs between two bands. By varying the acceleration of the optical lattice and measuring the time-dependence of the interference contrast, we were able to identify the instability regime and the characteristic time in which the dynamical instability destroys the interference pattern. Furthermore, we observed an increase in the condensate dimensions perpendicular to the lattice direction when the unstable region was reached. This indicates a mechanism whereby the longitudinal instability leads to an increase in the transverse release energy
