Infinitesimal-propagation equation for decoherence of an orbital-angular-momentum-entangled biphoton state in atmospheric turbulence

Filippus Stefanus Roux

We derive a first-order differential equation for the decoherence of an orbital angular momentum entangled biphoton state propagating through a turbulent atmosphere. The derivation is based on the distortion that orbital angular momentum states experience due to propagation through a thin sheet of turbulent atmosphere. This distortion is treated as an infinitesimal transformation leading to a first-order differential equation, which we call an infinitesimal propagation equation. The equation is applied to a simple qubit case to show how the entanglement decays.

Decoherence of high-dimensional orbital angular momentum entanglement in anisotropic turbulence

Xiang Yan, Pengfei Zhang, Cheng Yu Fan +4 more

Abstract The decoherence of high-dimensional orbital angular momentum (OAM) entanglement in the weak scintillation regime has been investigated. In this study, we simulate atmospheric turbulence by utilizing a multiple-phase screen imprinted with anisotropic non-Kolmogorov turbulence. The entanglement negativity and fidelity are introduced to quantify the entanglement of a high-dimensional OAM state. The numerical evaluation results indicate that entanglement negativity and fidelity last longer for a high-dimensional OAM state when the azimuthal mode has a lower value. Additionally, the evolution of higher-dimensional OAM entanglement is significantly influenced by OAM beam parameters and turbulence parameters. Compared to isotropic atmospheric turbulence, anisotropic turbulence has a lesser influence on high-dimensional OAM entanglement.

Atmospheric Turbulence and Orbital Angular Momentum of Single Photons for Optical Communication

Carl Paterson

The effects of propagation through random aberrations on coherence for single-photon communication systems based on orbital angular momentum states are quantified. A rotational coherence function is derived which leads to scattering equations for azimuthal modes of different orbital angular momentum states. The effect on a single-photon communication system is quantified using the channel capacity. The work shows that the decoherence effect of atmospheric turbulence on such systems is important even for weak turbulence.
