Abstract

It is shown that the coherent interaction between gamma quantum and a large nuclear ensemble induces the spatial dependence of refraction index on radio-frequency field phase. It leads to the occurrence of an optically non-homogeneous structure. Both the conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and of maximum absorption of probe gamma field, caused by an exchange with radio-frequency reservoir, were obtained. The evolution of both the EIT regime and the group velocity of slow gamma photons were analyzed. The~influence of gamma pulse duration, polarization of radiation and linear dimensions of a medium was explored.

Quantum interference effects of γ radiation under crossing-anticrossing of nuclear levels in an RF field

Sh. Sh. Bashkirov, V. Yu. Lyubimov, E. A. Popov +2 more

The quantum interference effects occurring in resonant scattering of a γ photon in the multilevel γ-optical medium 57 Fe, affected by an external RF field, have been theoretically investigated. It is shown that a significant reconstruction of the hyperfine structure of nuclear states leads to the interference of partial forwardscattering amplitudes of a γ photon and, therefore, to a significant change in the nuclear refractive index of the γ-optical medium, depending on the amplitude, frequency, and phase of the external RF field. The conditions are found under which the effect of electromagnetically induced transparency can be observed in the technique of in-phase detection of γ photons.

Quantum-interference effects for gamma radiation under crossing-anticrossing conditions for nuclear levels in an RF field

Sh. Sh. Bashkirov, V. Yu. Lyubimov, E. A. Popov

A new approach to observing the effect of electromagnetically induced transparency in gamma optics is proposed. The propagation of a resonant photon in a 57 Fe magnetic medium in an applied rf field is considered for this purpose. It is shown that, under crossing-anticrossing conditions, a resonant rf field substantially changes the gamma-optical properties of the medium, which become dependent on the parameters of the field. This opens the possibility for exercising a coherent control of the photon group velocity and a controllable filtration of unpolarized gamma radiation in a sample.

Coherent influence of RF field on the gamma-optical properties of a medium upon crossing-anticrossing of nuclear levels

V. Yu. Lyubimov, E. A. Popov, В. В. Самарцев +2 more

A new approach to the observation of electromagnetic-induced transparency in gamma optics is proposed. For this purpose, the propagation of a resonant gamma photon in a 57 Fe magnetic medium affected by an external radiofrequency (RF) field is considered. It is demonstrated that, in the case of crossing-anticrossing, a resonant RF field significantly transforms gamma-optical properties of the medium that become dependent on its parameters. This allows coherent control of the group velocity of gamma photons and controlled filtering of unpolarized gamma radiation in the sample to be realized.

Короткие импульсы нормальных мод электромагнитно индуцированной прозрачности

AbstractThe process of propagation of short probe pulses of electromagnetically induced transparency has been analyzed theoretically in the case of elliptically polarized control radiation. As a model of a resonant medium, a Λ scheme of quantum transitions between the $$^{3}{{P}_{0}}$$ , $$^{3}P_{1}^{0}$$ , and $$^{3}{{P}_{2}}$$ degenerate levels of the ^208Pb isotope has been used. The situation in which the probe radiation is rather weak compared to the control radiation has been examined. In this case, the field of the probe pulse can be represented as a sum of the fields of two elliptically polarized pulses that propagate in the medium independently of one another without changing their polarization state, which makes it possible to interpret them as nonstationary normal modes. Numerical simulation has shown that the structure of normal modes depends on the ratio of the width of the spectrum of the input probe pulse to the Doppler frequency broadening of the quantum transition that is resonant to the probe field. If this ratio is small, each mode in the medium is a single pulse similar to the input probe pulse. Under these conditions, the propagation of each normal mode in the medium can be fairly well characterized by the group velocity depending on the intensity and the state of polarization of the control radiation. As this ratio increases, normal modes in the medium initially acquire the shape of a regular decaying train of pulses, and then their structure becomes chaotic. The described evolution is accompanied by an increase in the energy absorption of the probe radiation by the medium and by a significant deterioration in the applicability of the notion of group velocity for describing the propagation process of normal modes.

Light slowing-down effects caused by nonlinear interactions of radiations in two-level systems

Yu. I. Heller, A. V. Sharypov

The effect of slowing down pulses of probe radiation in a medium consisting of two-level quantum systems whose longitudinal and transverse relaxation times strongly differ is studied. The conditions for the occurrence of “slow light” in a transparency window are obtained. Regimes are discovered in which the medium becomes transparent or amplifies the probe radiation, with the high dispersion of the refractive index being conserved. The parameters at which the delay time of the probe radiation reaches a maximum or the group velocity of this radiation decreases to a maximal possible value under the condition of exact resonance with the strong field are found.

Group velocity in a nuclear EIT-like Λ scheme and comparison with optical EIT

J. Odeurs, S. Gheysen, R. N. Shakhmuratov

The group velocity of gamma radiation scattered in the forward direction by a nuclear lambda scheme experiencing level mixing induced transparency, which shows some similarity to optical EIT, has been investigated. The equations for the nuclear coherences governing the group velocity have been solved. The group velocity decreases with the density of the resonant nuclei and with a decrease in the intensity of the mixing interaction. A comparison between the group velocity of the gamma radiation and the probe radiation in “classical” optical EIT conditions has been made.
