Abstract

Based on mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii and Bogoliubov--de Gennes approaches, we investigate excitations of a one-dimensional soft-core interacting ultracold Bose gas under the effect of an optical lattice. It is found that no matter how deep the lattice is, at $q\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ the lowest mode corresponds to a gapless phonon, ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{1}^{2}={v}_{1}^{2}{q}^{2}$, whereas the second lowest mode corresponds to a gapped optical phonon, ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{2}^{2}={\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}^{2}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{v}_{2}^{2}{q}^{2}$. Determination of the velocities ${v}_{1},{v}_{2}$, the gap $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$, and the possible sign change in ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{2}$ upon the change of lattice depth can give decisive measures to the transitions across various supersolid and solid states. The power law ${v}_{1}\ensuremath{\sim}{({f}_{s})}^{1/2}$ with ${f}_{s}$ the superfluid fraction is identified in the present system at the tight-binding regime.

The Excitation Spectra of a Supersolid

Lily Platt

This thesis explores the excitation spectra of supersolids - materials that remarkably manifest both lattice structure and superfluidity. We focus on an ultracold dilute gas exhibiting one-dimensional crystal structure with two gapless excitation branches. Two distinct supersolid systems are examined: a one dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate with softcore interactions, and a three dimensional dipolar Bose Einstein condensate confined within an infinitely long tube-shape potential. We investigate the crystal-like excitations of the supersolid through the use of the linear chain model and by introducing an elastic constant derived from ground-state calculations. Subsequently, we adopt a hydrodynamic approach based on an effective Lagrangian, which depends upon three fields, corresponding to lattice deformations, defect density current, the global phase fluctuations and four elastic parameters. This description of the supersolid allows for the determination of low-energy excitations, as well as the behaviour of the associated density and phase fluctuations of the two gapless branches. We validate our predictions for the low energy excitations by comparison to results from directly solving the Bogoliubov-de-Gennes equations, finding excellent agreement. This thesis provides a deeper understanding of the different types of supersolid systems, and how their low-energy behaviour depends upon their characteristic elastic energy scales.

Elementary excitations of ultracold soft-core bosons across the superfluid-supersolid phase transition

Tommaso Macrì, Fabian Maucher, Fabio Cinti +1 more

We investigate the zero-temperature excitation spectrum of two-dimensional soft-core bosons for a wide range of parameters and across the phase transition from a superfluid to a supersolid state. Based on mean-field calculations and recent quantum Monte Carlo results, we demonstrate the applicability of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, even at high interaction strengths where the system forms an insulating cluster crystal. Interestingly, our study reveals that the maximum energy of the longitudinal phonon band in the supersolid phase connects to the maxon energy of the superfluid at the phase transition.

Density Wave and Supersolid Phases of Correlated Bosons in an optical lattice

Abstract. – Motivated by the recent experiment on the Bose-Einstein condensation of 52 Cr atoms with long-range dipolar interactions (Werner J. et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 94 (2005) 183201), we consider a system of bosons with repulsive nearest and next-nearest neighbor interactions in an optical lattice. The ground state phase diagram, calculated using the Gutzwiller ansatz, shows, apart from the superfluid (SF) and the Mott insulator (MI), two modulated phases, i.e., the charge density wave (CDW) and the supersolid (SS). Excitation spectra are also calculated which show a gap in the insulators, gapless, phonon mode in the superfluid and the supersolid, and a mode softening of superfluid excitations in the vicinity of the modulated phases. We discuss the possibility of observing these phases in cold dipolar atoms and propose experiments to detect them. The recent observation [2] of quantum phase transition of interacting bosons in an optical lattice has given a new impetus to the study of correlated bosons. Sound waves and fluctuations in one-dimensional supersolids

L. M. Platt, D. Baillie, P. B. Blakie

We examine the low-energy excitations of a dilute supersolid state of matter with a one-dimensional crystal structure. A hydrodynamic description is developed based on a Lagrangian, incorporating generalized elastic parameters derived from ground state calculations. The predictions of the hydrodynamic theory are validated against solutions of the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations, by comparing the speeds of sound, density fluctuations, and phase fluctuations of the two gapless bands. Our results are presented for two distinct supersolid models: a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in an infinite tube and a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate of atoms with soft-core interactions. Characteristic energy scales are identified, highlighting that these two models approximately realize the bulk incompressible and rigid lattice supersolid limits.

Supersolid structure and excitation spectrum of soft-core bosons in three dimensions

Francesco Ancilotto, M. Rossi, Flavio Toigo

By means of a mean-field method, we have studied the zero-temperature structure and excitation spectrum of a three-dimensional soft-core bosonic system for a value of the interaction strength that favors a crystal structure made of atomic nanoclusters arranged with fcc ordering. In addition to the longitudinal and transverse phonon branches expected for a normal crystal, the excitation spectrum shows a soft mode related to the breaking of gauge symmetry, which signals a partial superfluid character of the solid. Additional evidence of supersolidity is provided by the calculation of the superfluid fraction, which shows a first-order drop, from 1 to 0.4, at the liquid-supersolid transition and a monotonic decrease as the interaction strength parameter is increased. The conditions for the coexistence of the supersolid with the homogeneous superfluid are discussed, and the surface tension of a representative solid-liquid interface is calculated.

Excitations of a Superfluid in a Three-Dimensional Optical Lattice

C. Schori, Thilo Stöferle, Henning Moritz +2 more

We prepare a Bose-Einstein condensed gas in a three-dimensional optical lattice and study the excitation spectrum of the superfluid phase for different interaction strengths. We probe the response of the system by modulating the depth of the optical lattice along one axis. The interactions can be controlled independently by varying the tunnel coupling along the other two lattice axes. In the weakly interacting regime we observe a small susceptibility of the superfluid to excitations, while for stronger interactions an unexpected resonance appears in the excitation spectrum. In addition we measure the coherent fraction of the atomic gas, which determines the depletion of the condensate.
