Abstract

We consider the creation of the maximum Raman coherence in the six-levelsystem using optimal control theory. Optimal fields are designed for different initial conditions, resonant, and off-resonant, using the Krotov method including a reference field into the cost functional. Suppression of the population transfer to the intermediate level is achieved via an additional functional constraint which depends on the system dynamics. We demonstrate that the spectrum of the optimised fields has major contribution from the corresponding resonant frequencies independently of the choice of carrier frequency of the initial guess field. We also indicate that the pulse train emerges as a solution of the control problem of coherence optimisation in multi-level quantum systems.

Optimal control of population and coherence in three-level Λ systems

Praveen Kumar, Svetlana Malinovskaya, Vladimir S. Malinovsky

Optimal control theory implementations for an efficient population transfer and creation of a maximum coherence in three-level system are considered. We demonstrate that the half-STIRAP (stimulated Raman adiabatic passage) scheme for creation of the maximum Raman coherence is the optimal solution according to the optimal control theory. We also present a comparative study of several implementations of optimal control theory applied to the complete population transfer and creation of the maximum coherence. Performance of the conjugate gradient method, the Zhu-Rabitz method and the Krotov method has been analyzed.

Optimal control of multilevel quantum systems in the field-interaction representation

Praveen Kumar, Svetlana Malinovskaya, Vladimir S. Malinovsky

A control strategy incorporating a fixed carrier frequency constraint on the optimal field is presented. As an illustrative example we consider the creation of maximum coherence in a six-level $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ system by solving the Schr\"odinger equation without the rotating-wave approximation in the field-interaction representation. We demonstrate that application of the optimal control theory optimization reformulated in the field-interaction representation allows one to keep the carrier frequency of the control field constant and successfully optimize off-resonant processes in multilevel quantum systems.

Optimal quantum control in nanostructures: Theory and application to a generic three-level system

Alfio Borzı̀, Georg Stadler, Ulrich Hohenester

Coherent carrier control in quantum nanostructures is studied within the framework of optimal control. We develop a general solution scheme for the optimization of an external control (e.g., lasers pulses), which allows to channel the system's wave function between two given states in its most efficient way; physically motivated constraints, such as limited laser resources or population suppression of certain states, can be accounted for through a general cost functional. Using a generic three-level scheme for the quantum system, we demonstrate the applicability of our approach and identify the pertinent calculation and convergence parameters.

Robust control by two chirped pulse trains in the presence of decoherence

Svetlana Malinovskaya

We discuss a novel method to create maximum coherence in a two-level system that is selectively excited among many having similar frequencies by making use of two specifically chirped pulses in the Raman configuration. The feasibility of the method is analyzed in the presence of decoherence caused by vibrational energy relaxation and collisional dephasing. It has been demonstrated that a high value of coherence may be sustained by the implementation of two chirped pulse trains prepared in accordance with the proposed method and having the same period as the vibrational energy relaxation time. Maximum coherence between predetermined states in atoms and molecules is an important aspect of many problems in quantum optics. One possible example is the generation of optimal CARS signal in the CARS microscopy aiming to reveal structures constituted of particular molecular groups. Presently, in experiments on biological imaging, the CARS signal is generated with implementation of picosecond laser pulses (1), a narrow spectral bandwidth of which allows one to address a particular molecular group with a good accuracy. Aiming to improve chemical sensitivity and to get optimal CARS signal for given pulse intensity we propose to use the quantum control methods for selective excitation of required vibrations in complex molecular systems. We developed a novel method that allows one to achieve maximum coherence in a predetermined vibrational mode in a multimode mole- cular system via the Raman transitions induced by the pump and Stokes chirped pulses. According to the Maxwell-Bloch equations, maximum coherence is the condition for the CARS signal to acquire the highest intensity upon propagation through a molecular medium (2). The mechanism of creation of maximum coherence underlying the proposed method is based on the adiabatic passage. An important aspect in the investigations asso- ciated with a condense phase is decoherence. Two main sources of decoherence, the vibrational energy relaxa- tion and collisional dephasing, may significantly affect the CARS signal intensity.
