An interpretation of quantum mechanics based on a waveguide analogy

Roald Ekholdt

Based on an observation that the basic mode of a common microwave waveguide is a solution to the Klein-Gordon equation, quantum mechanics is modeled as the wave-function propagated inside a waveguide. The guide width is determined by the rest-energy and the potential energy. Moreover, a geometrical optics model of the propagation illustrates how the width as a function of distance determines the velocity and accelerations of the particle. The model entails the disappearance of action-at-a-distance problem, and that interactions are conveyed via the potential, i.e. by photons.

Generation of photons with all-optically-reconfigurable entanglement in integrated nonlinear waveguides

James Titchener, Alexander S. Solntsev, Andrey A. Sukhorukov

We predict that all-optically-reconfigurable generation of photon pairs with tailored spatial entanglement can be realized via spontaneous parametric down conversion in integrated nonlinear coupled waveguides. The required elements of the output quantum wave function are directly mapped from the amplitudes and phases of the classical laser pump inputs in each waveguide. This is achieved through special nonuniform domain poling, which locally inverts the sign of quadratic nonlinear susceptibility and accordingly shapes the interference of biphoton quantum states generated along the waveguides. We demonstrate a device configuration for the generation of any linear combination of two-photon Bell states.

A Pair of Coupled Waveguides as a Classical Analogue for a Solid-State Qubit

Andrey E. Schegolev, N. V. Klenov, Anna V. Bogatskaya +2 more

We have determined conditions when a pair of coupled waveguides, a common element for integrated room-temperature photonics, can act as a qubit based on a system with a double-well potential. Moreover, we have used slow-varying amplitude approximation (SVA) for the "classical" wave equation to study the propagation of electromagnetic beams in a couple of dielectric waveguides both analytically and numerically. As a part of an extension of the optical-mechanical analogy, we have considered examples of "quantum operations" on the electromagnetic wave state in a pair of waveguides. Furthermore, we have provided examples of "quantum-mechanical" calculations of nonlinear transfer functions for the implementation of the considered element in optical neural networks.
