Energy Quantisation in Potential Wells

Theo van Holten

Published Dec 9, 2016• 0 citations

Abstract

In the previous chapter the motion of the “analogon-machine” was studied in case the torsional spring shown in Fig. 7.3 was removed. Our laboratory set-up thereby became the analogue of a free-flying droplet of charge. In the present chapter the analogue of a potential well will be studied. It is shown that energy quantisation is found, identical to the results of quantum mechanics. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.

Summing Up the Successes and the Remaining Mysteries

Theo van Holten

This chapter sums up the visualisations of quantum phenomena, made possible by the “droplet theory”. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.

From Rigid Marble to Vibrating Droplet of Charge: Model Assumptions

Theo van Holten

The two preceding chapters (Chaps. 2 and 3 ) were about “normal” quantum mechanics. From this point on we change the subject, and turn to the mental pictures proposed in this book about quantum behaviour. It is shown how the droplet of charge has been modelled. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.

The Transition Region as Predicted by Quantum Mechanics

Theo van Holten

In the present chapter the connection between quantum mechanics and classical physics is treated, as derived in established quantum theory. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.

Introduction and Outline

Theo van Holten

Following a short history of quantum mechanics, an outline of the contents of this book is given. A model of an electron is derived by time-averaging the motion of a “zittering” electromagnetic singularity, and by adding an apparent force in the form of surface tension in order to remove false electrostatic effects due to the model simplification. This model of a deformable droplet of charge is adopted as a working hypothesis, to see what are the consequences of such a model. The consequences are mathematically worked out and are shown to lead to a quantitatively correct replica of quantum behaviour. Matter waves are shown to correspond to trains of beats in the pulsation of the droplet, and the correct value of Planck's constant is derived. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.

First Glimpses of Quantum Behaviour: Matter Waves

Theo van Holten

Let us now study a few properties of the mechanical analogon, whilst carefully respecting the limitations just pointed out. The first step during a study of the contraption built up in our laboratory is, to leave out the spiral spring. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.

Lecture 2: Elements of the History of Quantum Mechanics II

Gianfausto Dell’Antonio

We mentioned in chapter “ Lecture 1: Elements of the History of Quantum Mechanics I ” that a line of research was centered on finding relations between the structure of the energy levels and the frequency of the emitted radiation and on describing the scattering from a dipole. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
