Abstract

Abstract Recently, a novel reference-frame-independent measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution protocol was proposed, which can remove all detector side channels as well as tolerate unknown and slow variance of reference frame without active alignment. In this paper, we propose a new tomographic method to estimate the key rate in that protocol. We estimate the key rate using conventional method and tomographic method respectively and compare the two methods by numerical simulation. The numerical simulation results show that tomographic approach is equivalent to the conventional approach, which can be used as an alternative method.

Tomographic Approach in Three-Orthogonal-Basis Quantum Key Distribution*

Wen-Ye Liang, Hao Wen, Zhen−Qiang Yin +4 more

Abstract At present, there is an increasing awareness of some three-orthogonal-basis quantum key distribution protocols, such as, the reference-frame-independent (RFI) protocol and the six-state protocol. For secure key rate estimations of these protocols, there are two methods: one is the conventional approach, and another is the tomographic approach. However, a comparison between these two methods has not been given yet. In this work, with the general model of rotation channel, we estimate the key rate using conventional and tomographic methods respectively. Results show that conventional estimation approach in RFI protocol is equivalent to tomographic approach only in the case of that one of three orthogonal bases is always aligned. In other cases, tomographic approach performs much better than the respective conventional approaches of the RFI protocol and the six-state protocol. Furthermore, based on the experimental data, we illustrate the deep connections between tomography and conventional RFI approach representations.

Asymmetric reference-frame-independent measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution

Kejin Wei, Zihao Chen, Zijian Li +2 more

Reference-frame-independent measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution is a promising candidate for building star-type quantum secure networks because it does not require reference alignment and removes all detector-side-channel attacks. However, prior works considered only a symmetric case in which the channels of both users have the same loss. In a realistic quantum secure network, the losses of various channels are likely to be different owing to their geographical locations. In this study, we present an asymmetric protocol for scalable reference-frame-independent measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution networks. By allowing independent adjustments of signal intensities of both users, our protocol provides a higher key rate than previous symmetric protocols in a realistic quantum secure network. The simulation results demonstrate that our protocol works well under realistic experimental conditions and obtains a key rate that is approximately one order of magnitude higher than that of previous methods. Our study paves the way for high-rate quantum secure communication network development.

Efficient decoy states for the reference-frame-independent measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution

Feng-Yu Lu, Zhen−Qiang Yin, Guan‐Jie Fan‐Yuan +9 more

Reference-frame-independent measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (RFI-MDI-QKD) is a novel protocol that eliminates all possible attacks on the detector side and the necessity of reference-frame alignment in source sides. However, its performance may degrade notably due to statistical fluctuations since more parameters, e.g., yields and error rates for mismatched-basis events, must be accumulated to monitor the security. In this work, we find that the original decoy states method estimates these yields overpessimistically since it ignores the potential relations between different bases. Through jointly processing parameters of different bases, the performance of RFI-MDI-QKD is greatly improved in terms of the secret key rate and achievable distance when statistical fluctuations are considered (the statistical fluctuation analysis is the first step to the final analysis of the finite key size effect). Our results pave an avenue towards practical RFI-MDI-QKD.

Reference-frame-independent measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution using fewer states

Jing-Yang Liu, Xingyu Zhou, Qin Wang

Reference-frame-independent measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (RFI-MDI-QKD) is immune to both detector side channel attacks and slow drifts of reference frames, and thus possesses a high level of security. In the traditional protocol of RFI-MDI-QKD, each legitimate user, Alice or Bob, has to prepare six encoding states in three orthogonal bases ($X, Y$, and $Z$), which are sent to the untrusted third party, Charlie. Then all the successful counting events are utilized for parameter estimations, which suffer from a severe finite-size effect. In this paper, we propose a scheme on RFI-MDI-QKD with fewer states and demonstrate that it can be secured and made useful by utilizing semidefinite programming. Numerical simulation results reveal the equivalence between those groups of different monitoring states from Alice and Bob. In addition, when considering practical experimental conditions and taking finite-size effects into account, our proposal can achieve a better performance than the traditional six-state RFI-MDI scheme, which provides a resource-saving and simpler state-preparation approach for practical implementations without sacrificing key rates.

Practical decoy-state reference-frame-independent measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution

Chun-Mei Zhang, Jian-Rong Zhu, Qin Wang

Reference-frame-independent measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (RFI-MDI-QKD) is proposed to remove all possible detector side channel attacks without the alignment of reference frames. Due to unavoidable multiphoton events in practical sources, the decoy-state method is always adopted in real-life QKD systems. Unlike original MDI-QKD (O-MDI-QKD), the characterization on practical decoy-state RFI-MDI-QKD is still absent to date. In this paper, we investigate the performance of practical decoy-state RFI-MDI-QKD at different misalignments of reference frames with full parameter optimization when considering statistical fluctuations, and provide a clear comparison between decoy-state RFI-MDI-QKD and O-MDI-QKD. Simulation results demonstrate that decoy-state RFI-MDI-QKD can exhibit performance comparable to that of O-MDI-QKD in practical scenarios, which is very robust in QKD systems.

Reference-frame-independent measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution with imperfect sources

Jian-Rong Zhu, Chun-Mei Zhang, Qin Wang

Abstract Reference-frame-independent measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (RFI-MDI-QKD) can remove all potential detector side-channel attacks and the requirement of real-time alignment of reference frames. However, all previous RFI-MDI-QKD implementations assume the perfect state preparation in sources, which is impractical and may lead to security loopholes. Here, we propose an RFI-MDI-QKD protocol which is robust against state preparation flaws. Comparing to the conventional six-state RFI-MDI-QKD, our scheme can be realized with only four flawed states, which improves the practical security of RFI-MDI-QKD and simplifies the experimental implementation. In addition, simulation results demonstrate that source flaws in Z basis have adverse effect on the performance of RFI-MDI-QKD while the source flaws in X and Y bases have almost no effect. We hope that this work could provide a valuable reference for practical implementations of RFI-MDI-QKD.
